‘Inside Outlander’ Aftershow: Kieran Bew Talks Filming Fight Scenes With Sam Heughan (VIDEO)

Captain Charles Cunningham may have been badly wounded in the fifth episode of Outlander‘s final season, but actor Kieran Bew confirmed to TV Insider that his character, a scheming British loyalist, will live to appear in the series finale. Watch the video above for our full interview with Bew as part of our Inside Outlander aftershow.

But right now, he’s possibly the most hated man in the time travel romance after he tried to take over Fraser’s Ridge and kill heroic Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).

With Cunningham defeated and possibly paralyzed despite Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) care, Bew sees a possibility of his character trying to get back into the Frasers’ good graces. “He is badly wounded. Given that Cunningham is such a politicking character, I think he would try and align himself with a person who was in the strongest position to help him. He might try and ingratiate himself back into their favor because that’s the kind of character he is, and that’s how he’s ended up in the position anyway. I wouldn’t put it past him to try anything.”

No matter what Cunningham’s next move, Bew sees his character and Jamie as sharing a trait that might make further deception a bit tough. “Cunningham and Jamie, despite their differences, despite the abrasiveness, there is also weirdly an honesty,” the actor says. “They can be manipulative, but honesty can come through because they’ll say whatever they think.”

Heughan and Bew had no problem being honest with each other on set. They may portray adversaries on screen, but in real life, they’ve known each other many years. They’d discussed working together on Outlander when Heughan was first cast more than 10 years ago. Bew reveals how well they get along when describing shooting the nighttime fight scene: “It was quite funny how we’d go from a very pedestrian chat to, ‘OK, I’m going to strangle you now,’ as if it’s completely normal. There was a point when I was pinning him across the counter, and we were having to adjust our legs and move around. I was having to move his kilt and his knees and trying not to sort of maim each other. And I said, ‘There’d be people who pay a lot of money to be in this position, Sam.’ And we had a good laugh about it.”
