Everyone questions everything they see on April Fool’s Day, including Today‘s Willie Geist.
Geist joined Jenna Bush Hager at the Today With Jenna & Sheinelle anchor desk for the second day this week on Wednesday, April 1. The duo was joined by Today Digital Executive Editor Arianna Davis Santana for the episode’s “The Feed” segment, during which they discussed topics such as Lamar Odom‘s new documentary, Untold: The Death & Life of Lamar Odom, and Raye‘s new album, This Music May Contain Hope.
Davis Santana wrapped up the segment by having the show’s crew bring out a special sweet treat. “We’ve got to talk about this viral cake that’s being walked in very carefully, I note. Very carefully,” Geist stated. Davis Santana went on to explain, “This is a $20,000 cake. … It is all the rage right now on the internet because they only make one of these every single day.”
Bush Hager walked over to help the Jenna & Friends crew member walking the cake over to the desk. Just as she took the cake, it swiftly slipped off the tray and hit the studio floor. The smeared icing also caused Bush Hager to slip and grab her chair for support.
The set went silent for several seconds before Davis Santana stated, “Well, there goes the one cake, $20,000.” Geist, however, quickly caught on to the bit. “I knew it,” he said while pointing to Bush Hager, who broke into a smile. “You knew it?” Bush Hager questioned.
After helping her up, Geist exclaimed, “April Fools!” Bush Hager asked whether Geist had been aware of the prank the whole time, but he clarified that he only realized the cake was a ruse when Bush Hager dropped it and fell.
“Was the fall real?” Davis Santana asked Bush Hager, who confirmed the fall was not planned. Davis Santana added, “Right before we went on air, [Willie] turned to me and was like, ‘Is this real?’ And I was like, ‘Yes!’”
While Geist didn’t believe Bush Hager’s slip-up, he did believe that a bakery would sell a $20,000 cake. “Upstairs, I was like, ‘It’s a crazy world out there. Someone’s gonna buy that for their wedding. Maybe it’s real,’” he told his colleagues. “I didn’t know why they’d send us one for free.”
The dessert was actually a pre-made cake that a Jenna & Sheinelle crew member stripped and re-iced within 45 minutes. “It was worth it!” Geist said of the person’s cake design work.
Geist has guest-hosted Jenna & Sheinelle since Tuesday, March 31, and will remain on the show until Friday, April 3. Sheinelle Jones is on a break from the NBC morning show this week to enjoy spring break with her kids.
Earlier on Jenna & Sheinelle, Bush Hager revealed that her kids had already pranked her ahead of April Fool’s Day. While her son, Hal, pretended to be sick, her eldest daughter, Mila, fooled their family’s group chat into thinking they adopted a puppy by creating fake, AI-generated images of an adorable dog. (Bush Hager shares her three kids, including daughter Poppy, with her husband, Henry Hager.)
“Finally, there was a million texts, like, ‘What’s the name of the dog? What’s the name of the dog? What’s the name of the dog?’ And [Mila] just wrote back, ‘The name is Prank,’” Bush Hager shared.
