‘Bones’ Says Goodbye to a Familiar Face

Spoiler alert! This post contains plot information about the Feb. 14 hour of Bones.
When Bones first revealed to viewers that Max (Ryan O’Neal) was sick early in Season 12, executive producer Michael Peterson told TV Insider, “It’s going to be resolved in a way that hopefully no one is expecting.”
The other shoe dropped in Tuesday’s episode as the truth of his illness came out—he secretly had a pacemaker put in—and he seemed to be thriving…until he was shot trying to protect his grandchildren. Max was able to have a heart-to-heart with his daughter, Brennan (Emily Deschanel), while he was recuperating at the hospital, but he ultimately passed away.
As Brennan is consumed by grief, the next hour also features the return of her onetime love, Sully (Eddie McClintock). “What’s interesting about that one is how it relates to the larger arc we’re doing, where Booth and Brennan’s relationship is tested a little bit because of what happened in Booth’s past,” Peterson previously said. “[Sully] comes in during a very vulnerable time in Brennan’s life. It’s an odd time for him to show up, it puts a little more strain on them. It’s a beautiful resolution, but it’ll be stressful for the fans to see Brennan’s past love showing up at that key moment he does.”
The series also isn’t done saying goodbye to Max. The Feb. 21 hour, “The Grief and the Girl,” includes Max’s funeral. And this farewell video to Max includes a bit of what Brennan has to say about her father:

Marisa. I would like to know if you ever interview Peterson - I have watched the sneak peeks & promo , Fox accidentally released the sneaks early
I would like to know why they are reconning Brennan & Sully. Am I suppose to believe that Sully is Brennan's first love? Is that what the show is trying to sell me now? So I just imagined that Brennan didn't believe in or give love a no chance until she give Booth a chance, am I am suppose to forget she wrote her wedding vows before she met Sully, that she didn't go sailing with him because she loved Booth
That's the show I have been watching for 12yrs
The show I haven't been watching is Brennan & Sully romance & he is is Brennan's long lost love that got away, in fact going by Angela, Sully is on level with Booth, " the only guy except Booth who stood a a chance with Brennan"
And then we have Sully professing that Brennan is the only one woman is loved first, on a night out together with no Booth. Exactly how is this acceptable behavior with a married woman?
Whose love story am I watching,? Booth & Brennan's OR reconning Brennan's & Sully's? I am truly flummoxed why they are tainting, rewriting & damaging B&B relationship so near series end. Brennan won't cheat on Booth sexually, an emotional affair relying on a man for emotional support who is not her husband, yes my fear lies there
I don't want my 12yrs of watching bones ruined by this episode, and I am afraid it will
How can a 4 ep character that hasn't been mentioned once in 10yrs is getting so much importance now?

Hi Penny,
I don't anticipate speaking with the showrunners again prior to the finale. I haven't seen next week's episode yet, but I truly don't believe there is any doubt the love story at the core of the series is Booth and Brennan.
Right or wrong, the promo was designed to get people intrigued to tune in next week. (And the writers/EPs, etc., have no say over those.) Because I haven't seen it yet, I have no desire to blindly defend (or tear down) the episode; right now, I have hope it will ultimately be handled respectfully (especially since Karine wrote the hour).
I do hope the episode doesn't disappoint you/destroy your vision of the show.

Thank you for your reply. I am just so frustrated that storyline has been dug up after 10yrs. I have seen sneaks & trailers & a preview and its all just so uncomfortable watching Brennan out on a dinner date, hugging, touching hands with Sully, talking about their relationship. It feels like a huge slap in the face to B&B fans. And a betrayal to Booth. Its too intimate between them. All while Booth is being rejected by Brennan and sent off to Canada with Aubrey.
I feel like Sully has been elevated to a level of importance that has nothing to do with Brennan of the now. Or the show.
I hope it won't ruin my vision and love of the show but I fear it will.

Completely agree with you on this Penny. Even in that youtube video of Eddie McClintock talking about the episode, we had to see Booth telling Brennan that he understands how much Sully means to her, and hear her give all the credit to Sully for (presumably) making her ready to be in a relationship with Booth. So, it's all about Sully now. It's difficult to even absorb how we got to this state of affairs in the final season of Bones, which was supposed to be, according to Michael Peterson himself, a gift to fans. Not sure how many fans are seeing this as any sort of gift. Hopefully there is a whole lot more to this episode than we are seeing, and Karine has written something that honors Booth and Brennan as the central love story in this show.

That's what is kicking me in the gut. Why is Sully getting so much credit for Brennan's evolution. Why is Booth's key role in Brennan's journey being diminished so much we actually have Booth saying he knows Sully is important to Brennan. Since when! Am I the only only one who remember he was on Bones for 4 eps TEN years ago. And never mentioned once again!?
If he was that important then why did nobody ever mention him in ten yrs? What we did get in those 10yrs was Booth's love , support, never ending at her side, helping her to become the person she is. And all of a sudden they are giving Sully more credit for this than than Booth!?
I am truly shocked & upset.
What show have I been watching?
I truly hope I am wrong and that Tuesday isn't the Brennan & Sully lost romance hour where they get highlighted & talk fondly of their relationship. It is SO inappropriate & disrespectful to Booth and their marriage. When it should be about Booth & Brennan and how much they mean & need each other
I will happily eat humble pie if I am wrong in my assumptions cos I truly don't want to learn come Tuesday my love of B&B has been built on a lie , that 12yrs of my life have been utterly wasted supporting a show and ship that was built on lies

It was a decent show but it just took a little too long to get it going but that last scene with Max and Brennan was lovely and of course Booth and Brennan's last scene together clearly show how painful this loss will be. I hope Bones is careful next week because for the umpteenth time we didn't want Sully back and yet he is foisted on us. Brennan and Booth's grief didn't need him. But even though Bones doesn't have much longer I am going to miss Max. Nice to see their kids last night as well. We hadn't seen Hank all year
