Get a check-up if your pulse isn’t racing about the Scrubs revival! The medical comedy, which wrapped its initial nine-season run on ABC in 2010, premieres anew with hilarious back-to-back episodes on February 25. The three MDs we met as interns are middle-aged and feeling it. Dreamer JD (Zach Braff) is a concierge doc for the rich, while competitive Turk (Donald Faison) and perfectionist Elliot (Sarah Chalke) still work at Sacred Heart Hospital along with grumpy Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley) and no-BS head nurse Carla (Judy Reyes). Watch the video for our laughter-filled interview where they choose who among them is most likely to excel at Scrubs situations in their off-screen lives above.

“It’s the perfect time to bring it back because we picked up with these characters when they were going, ‘What’s my life going to look like?’ Now, they’re in midlife and they’re like, ‘We know how it turned out. But what is the meaning of it all and what’s next?’” says Aseem Batra, who executive produces along with original series creator Bill Lawrence. The writers smartly don’t mess with the show’s magical mix of fast-paced dialogue, slapstick physical comedy, JD’s surreal daydream sequences, and a lot of heart.

What’s new this time around is that the three core docs have bigger responsibilities, creakier bodies, and second thoughts. Braff says, “JD’s realizing that as a concierge doctor, he’s very lonesome. He misses making a difference. He misses the community and fellowship that is part of working in a hospital and teaching.”

Faison adds that his character, now a dad to teens, is also nostalgic for their more carefree, connected days. “Turk longs for the way it was. That’s the hard part about getting older. It’s not for everyone. You have to have thick skin to get older and to live life. And he wants it like it used to be.”

Elliot is the most optimistic one. She’s looking ahead and working with a new group of interns. “Elliot wants to be a really good teacher. Dr. Cox was her mentor, and she wants to be able to do that for these kids,” Chalke says. Hey, the best lesson for the newbies might be watching the old friends in action. “The theme song is, ‘I can’t do this all on my own.’ All three of them want that.’” This is the only time we’ve been thrilled about going to the hospital.
