O say, can you see! The Reapers are lighting up walkers like it’s the Fourth of July when the zombie drama returns, midbattle, for the second of its three-part final round.

The military-trained group’s newly created weapon is launching fireworks at the undead—but leader Maggie (Lauren Cohan, above) and former villain Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) are also targets. Will they and their allies make it out with the food they need? “Everything feels so ill-fated and challenging,” Cohan says.

Here’s what you need to know.

The Reapers Loom Large

Now that fanatical leader Pope (Ritchie Costner) has been offed by underling Leah (Lynn Collins)—Daryl’s (Norman Reedus) former love—she’s in charge. What ultimately happens with her and Maggie has “Sergio Leone vibes,” Cohan teases, and “ends up being extremely devastating.”

Maggie Recognizes Negan’s Skills

Maggie still hates the man who murdered her husband, but she needs him to escape the Reapers. “In their world, he is an asset. He’s capable,” Cohan notes. “Maggie even starts to defer to him, to take an interest in his opinion.”

The Commonwealth Is Coming

Representatives of the seemingly idyllic community show up at Alexandria’s gates. “A lot of the characters [wonder], ‘Is it OK for me to let myself enjoy this, for it not to be so hard anymore?’ Maggie smells a rat.”
