‘Umbrella Academy’: 7 Burning Questions for a Potential Season 3

The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Questions
Netflix

Welcome to a new reality.

The Umbrella Academy ended its second season with the Hargreeves siblings returning to the present from the ’60s, only to find their home was very different. Their father, Reginald (Colm Feore), was alive, and there was a new team of (presumably) super-powered individuals, the Sparrow Academy, including their previously dead brother Ben (Justin H. Min). The timeline had clearly been changed.

Netflix has yet to renew the series for a third season, but creator Steve Blackman told TV Insider he hopes it will. “I’m very proud of what this cast and crew and writers have done,” he said. “I love this season. I think it’s a step up from Season 1, but let’s see what Netflix sees, what the fans think. If we’re lucky to have a Season 3, I’d be thrilled.”

And after that cliffhanger, fans are hoping to see more as well. But if it does return for a third season, what does it need to address? Scroll down for some of our burning questions.

The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Question Sparrow Academy
Netflix

Who are the members of the Sparrow Academy?

The only member of the new team we saw was the now-alive Ben, while the others stood above on the second floor in the shadows. (And there was a floating green cube with them.) Who is everyone else? What are their powers? Are they in fact others born on the same day as the Hargreeves? Can they be trusted? After all, we don’t know what Reginald is up to…

The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Question Ben Alive
Netflix

How different is Ben?

Over the course of two seasons, fans have really only gotten to know Ben as a ghost, thanks to his brother Klaus’ (Robert Sheehan) ability, since he died when he was a kid. But who is this Ben in the new timeline, who didn’t grow up with the siblings we’ve gotten to know and was raised by Reginald, with others (presumably) his age?

The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Question Pogo
Netflix

Are Pogo and Grace around?

Reginald is alive in this timeline, so is it possible that Pogo, the advanced chimpanzee and friend to the Umbrella Academy who died in Season 1 is still around? And is Grace (Jordan Claire Robbins), whom we met as a human in the ’60s in Season 2 but as a robot and the Umbrella Academy’s mother in Season 1, somewhere? Or might that green cube fill similar roles to the Sparrow Academy and therefore have an effect on the kind of people they are?

The Umbrella Academy - Emmy Raver-Lampman as Allison Hargreeves and Yusuf Gatewood as Raymond Chestnut

Will we see any of the people from the '60s again?

Of the siblings, Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) and Vanya (Ellen Page) were the ones who really created lives in the past. Allison married Raymond Chestnut (Yusuf Gatewood), while Vanya fell in love with Sissy (Marin Ireland). But both had to say goodbye when they returned to the present. With time travel a factor—and the possibility that at the very least, Sissy’s son Harlan (Justin Paul Kelly), who has powers of his own, might still be alive—will any of those characters (or perhaps someone from Klaus’ cult) show up in the present?

The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Question Lila
Christos Kalohoridis/Netflix

Where/when is Lila?

The Hargreeves faced off against Diego’s (David Castañeda) love interest and someone they’d realized was likely one of their siblings, given her powers, in the finale. But as everyone soon figured out, the Handler (Kate Walsh) had had Five kill Lila’s (Ritu Arya) parents because she wanted the child with powers. In the end, Lila grabbed one of the briefcases from the Commission and used it to go to an unknown location and time.

The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Question Commission
Christos Kalohoridis/Netflix

What is the Commission going to be like now?

The Handler tried her best to take the Commission for herself in Season 2, even having Five (Aidan Gallagher) kill the board of directors, but after her death in the finale, Herb (Ken Hall) was left in charge (temporarily). He was somewhat of an ally to the Hargreeves—at least more so than anyone else at the Commission—but what will the new board be like? And what role will the Commission play in a third season where the Hargreeves siblings would be dealing with the Sparrow Academy?

The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Question Powers
Netflix

How will the siblings' powers continue to evolve?

In different timelines—such as the one where the 1963 doomsday happened and the one where the Handler killed the Umbrella Academy in the finale—we saw the siblings take their powers to the next level. But what about the timeline we’re seeing now? What will we see from their powers next?
