‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Teaser: See Late Lance Reddick as Zeus (VIDEO)

One of Lance Reddick‘s final screen appearances is in Disney+‘s Percy Jackson and the Olympians TV series, and the first teaser trailer for the fantasy series shows him as Zeus alongside Walker Scobell‘s titular demigod. Also featured in the teaser are Jay Duplass as Hades, Megan Mullally as the monster Alecto (disguised as Percy’s teacher, Mrs. Dodds), Glynn Turman as Chiron, and Suzanne Cryer as the monster Echidna.

Disney+ dropped the teaser (above) on Tuesday, September 19, giving fans the biggest glimpse into the show so far. It begins like the first book, with Percy on a school field trip to a Manhattan museum, where he is attacked by Alecto. Mullally approaches the teen with a terrifying look on her face before she transforms into an evil winged creature. This moment leads to Percy’s mom, Sally Jackson (Virginia Kull), telling her son the truth about his father, Poseidon (played by Toby Stephens).

Aryan Simhadri is seen as satyr Grover Underwood in his human disguise in the early clips. When the guardian arrives at Percy’s house, his goat-like legs are seen for the first time (Grover’s full satyr form has yet to be seen in previous teasers from the series). Percy arrives to Camp Half-Blood where he sees Chiron in his full centaur form for the first time. Up until then, Percy knew Chiron as his teacher, Mr. Brunner.

The activities director of Camp Half-Blood warns Percy that Zeus’s lightning bolt has been stolen, which sets Percy off on his cross-country adventure. (In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, Dior Goodjohn‘s Clarisse La Rue also seems to appear in her armor at the camp.)

Joining Percy on the quest are Grover and Annabeth Chase, played by Leah Sava Jeffries. The trio are seen training at Camp Half-Blood in the clips in addition to snippets from their epic adventure laid out in author Rick Riordan’s book (Season 1 follows the plot of Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, the first of the PJO book franchise). Some of the scenes shown are famous book moments, like the tunnel of love scene also depicted in the photos below.

Two of Olympus’s leading gods — brothers Zeus and Hades — are seen in the teaser, in addition to some other gods. First is Reddick as Zeus, stepping down from his Olympian throne. Then there’s Duplass as Hades, seen in a zoomed-out shot of his underworld kingdom. And then there’s Adam Copeland as Ares, god of war, who encounters Percy, Grover, and Annabeth on the road before bolting off on his war chariot, which takes the form of a motorcycle.

The teaser ends with an emotionally charged exchange between Percy and his mom as she warns, “You’re going to have to be brave now.” As she drives through a storm, a charging minotaur is seen running next to her. Percy then wields his famous weapon, Anaklusmos (aka Riptide, the pen that turns into a sword), to fight the minotaur. Playing throughout the trailer is a cinematic remix of Vance Joy’s “Riptide,” a perfect song selection for the son of Poseidon.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 1 will be eight episodes long, with the first two premiering on Wednesday, December 20 on Disney+. Additional guest stars include Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hermes), Jason Mantzoukas (Dionysus, aka Mr. D), Charlie Bushnell (Luke Castellan), Jessica Parker Kennedy (Medusa), Olivea Morton (Nancy Bobofit), Timm Sharp (Gabe Ugliano), and Timothy Omundson (Hephaestus).
