Two decades on, Life’s Still Unfair for Frankie Muniz’s namesake character in Malcolm in the Middle and its new four-part revival, premiering on Hulu and Disney+ on Friday, April 10.

The original sitcom ended its run on Fox in 2006, but Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair promises to be just as chaotic — and just as charming.

Ken Kwapis, a director and producer of both Malcolm iterations, told TV Insider the revival is “beautifully written” and “as emotional as it is funny.”

And, he said, Malcolm in the Middle exemplifies a TV comedy that seems broad — with visual gags and physical comedy aplenty — but has “emotionally accurate” depths.

“None of the comedy would work if it weren’t for the fact that these characters felt real and distinct and relatable,” he explained. “Even if the performance level is occasionally high octane, emotionally it’s still 100 percent grounded.”

Ahead of Friday’s premiere, here’s a look at Malcolm and his fam then and now — plus the new family members joining the mix.
