‘For All Mankind’ Season 5’s New Decade & Characters, Explained

It’s almost time to go back to Mars (and beyond) when For All Mankind returns for Season 5.

The Apple TV drama will return to take audiences into a new decade — this time, the 2010s — as the space race continues after the events of Season 4’s finale.

When does For All Mankind Season 5 premiere?

The first episode of the season will hit Apple TV on Friday, March 27. New episodes will drop weekly after that.

What will happen in For All Mankind Season 5?

Cocreator Ben Nedivi told TV Insider, “I think the biggest changes this year is probably the generational shift of the show, which felt necessary after 40 years of For All Mankind. We’re a little overdue. But I think we wanted to do it in a way that felt natural and not just a total changeover. So I think there’s a few new characters who are introduced to represent what, to us, felt necessary to introduce this idea of living on Mars as a home. I think that’s the real change. Up until now, a lot of space exploration on the show was about adventurers reaching these new places, and now it’s a home, it’s a place. And we have characters like Alex, who’s … been to Earth and but can’t go back. So I think it introduces a new element that I think hasn’t been explored in depth, in a way, of this home.”

The official description for the new season tells us, “Season 5 of For All Mankind picks up in the years since the Goldilocks asteroid heist. Happy Valley has grown into a thriving colony with thousands of residents and a base for new missions that will take us even further into the solar system. But with the nations of Earth now demanding law and order on the Red Planet, friction continues to build between the people who live on Mars and their former home.”

The episodes’ titles and descriptions give even more clues about what to expect:

  • Episode 1: “First Light” (March 27): “Nine years after the Goldilocks asteroid heist, Happy Valley has grown into a thriving colony. But an unsettling discovery threatens their peace.”
  • Episode 2: “The Hard Six” (April 3): “Ed rallies Happy Valley’s residents in support of one of their own. Kelly refuses to back down from an opportunity.”
  • Episode 3: “Home” (April 10): “The consequences of Ed’s actions begin to play out. Aleida finds an unexpected solution to her problem.”
  • Episode 4: “Open Source” (April 17): “Alex takes Ed’s advice and finds a new project to focus on: a job at Helios.”
  • Episode 5: “Svodoba” (April 24): “Chaos erupts on Mars following a shocking revelation.”
  • Episode 6: “No Sudden Moves” (May 1): “A desperate group of Marsies tries to rectify a dangerous situation.”
  • Episode 7: “The Sirens of Titan” (May 8): “A fatal miscalculation puts the Titan mission in jeopardy. Dev makes a drastic decision.”
  • Episode 8: “Brave New World” (May 15): “The Titan crew weighs a risky move, while Mars struggles to keep up morale.”
  • Episode 9: “Sons and Daughters” (May 22): “The Marsies formulate a plan. Kelly faces a major setback.”
  • Episode 10: “This Land Is Our Land” (May 29): “Season finale. The resilience of Mars is put to the test.”
