‘A Different World’: Which Original Series Stars Didn’t Return for the Revival?
Netflix‘s A Different World sequel is welcoming a long list of familiar faces back to Hillman College, including several stars who helped make the original sitcom a hit. But with a series that ran for six seasons and featured a constantly evolving ensemble, not every memorable face is making the trip back.
Some actors left A Different World years before its 1993 finale, while others played characters who were never part of the show’s core group. A few have since stepped away from acting or moved on to very different chapters in their careers. From Lisa Bonet and Marisa Tomei to Sinbad and Loretta Devine, here’s what happened to some of the original show’s missing stars — and why they aren’t part of the new series.

Lisa Bonet - Denise Huxtable
Bonet left the original series just after Season 1 in 1988 due to creative differences and her pregnancy. When Bonet became pregnant with Zoë Kravitz, incoming producer Debbie Allen wanted to weave the pregnancy into the show, but the show’s producer and creator, disgraced icon Bill Cosby, rejected it, stating, “Bonet is pregnant, not Denise. No.”
Bonet has spent recent years focusing on her private life, family, and personal creative projects, choosing to largely step away from the Hollywood spotlight. Her last major television acting credit remains her 2016 arc on Ray Donovan.
Marisa Tomei - Maggie Lauten
Marisa Tomei was “let go” from the cast as part of a massive creative overhaul after season one when the show changed its premise and tone. Star Dawnn Lewis told Vanity Fair, “[The creators] wanted to go in a different direction culturally, which meant Marisa was also gone. She and Lisa are incredible women, and they were so much fun to work with. It was sad for me—because we had started this journey together—for them to not be there anymore.”
“It seems like another planet. It was a highlight, for sure. I really, really enjoyed it. I had a really good time on that,” the actress said on the Today show in February 2024.
Sinbad - Coach Walter Oakes
On A Different World, Sinbad played Coach Walter Oakes, a funny and supportive fixture at Hillman College. His biggest storyline was his on-again, off-again romance with Jaleesa Vinson (Dawnn Lewis), which ended when the two called off their wedding at the altar.
According to Entertainment Tonight, Sinbad was not included in Netflix’s A Different World sequel, but his representative has said he remains open to returning if the right storyline comes along.
Loretta Devine - Stevie Rallen
Loretta Devine’s character, Stevie Rallen, left A Different World when the show underwent a major creative overhaul after its first season, with more of a focus on the core student ensemble. In the show’s narrative, Stevie Rallen was written out in Season 2 with the explanation that she left Hillman College after getting married.
“One day I came to work, and my whole apartment was gone. It was just a door. That was sort of a clue [that my character wasn’t coming back]. It was one of the tragedies of my career. I was devastated. I thought everything was just over,” Devine told Vanity Fair.
Devine was never a part of the show’s core legacy, so she was not asked to return for the first season of the revival.
Gary Dourdan - Shazza Zulu
Gary Dourdan played Shazza Zulu, a socially conscious Hillman student and poet who appeared in the later seasons of A Different World. He dated Freddie Brooks (Cree Summer), but their relationship ended after she cheated on him with Ron Johnson (Darryl M. Bell).
Dourdan later broke out as Warrick Brown on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. After leaving the CBS hit, he faced legal and financial troubles, including a 2011 domestic battery case that resulted in five years of probation, domestic violence counseling, and drug treatment.
More recently, Dourdan made his Broadway debut in Hadestown in 2026. Shazza was a recurring character rather than a series regular, and Dourdan is not part of the sequel’s core returning cast.
