7 Underrated Friendships on TV Right Now
Gotham’s Gordon and Harvey
The work dynamic between the GCPD’s James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) has shifted over the past three seasons of Gotham – Harvey is technically Jim’s boss now! – but their friendship has stayed rock-solid. To shake Jim from the deadly grip of the Tetch virus in the Season 3 finale, Harvey even admitted, “You’re the best cop I ever worked with and the best friend I ever had.” Cue the collective ‘Awwww.’
Supergirl’s Kara and Lena
While most fans are hoping the friendship between Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) and Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) will take a more romantic turn, we’re plenty happy seeing these two grab lunch and give each other advice. Now we’re just waiting for the inevitable moment (already predicted by Mama Luthor) when Lena finds out that Kara is Supergirl, and what that’ll mean for this adorable duo.
Designated Survivor’s Seth and Emily
These two White House staffers and platonic pals went through a lot in Season 1 of the ABC drama, but despite the political twists they face during their jobs, Seth (Kal Penn) and Emily (Italia Ricci) find time to give each other advice and joke around like great pals in their downtime.
Silicon Valley’s Richard and Jared
Tech innovator Richard Hendricks (Thomas Middleditch) and his right-hand man Jared Dunn (Zach Woods) don’t quite have a traditional bro-ship, but in the very least, Jared’s fiercely loyal and protective instincts deserve him a Best Friendship Award. Seriously, this dude has threatened to do some pretty messed up things to Richard’s enemies. Hopefully we’ll see Richard return the favor of friendship more often.
The Mick’s Mickey and Alba
After walking into her sister’s mansion in Greenwich, CT, to take care of her niece and nephews, Mickey (Kaitlin Olson) found a true support system and bestie in the Pemberton’s maid Alba (Carla Jimenez). Whether they’re out partying or arguing over brunch plans, we’re glad these two found each other.
iZombie’s Liv and Ravi
Since Day 1 these platonic pals have been some serious #friendshipgoals. Ravi Chakrabarti (Rahul Kohli) immediately accepted Liv Moore (Rose McIver) and all her undead quirks, and they’ve helped each other through break ups, work life and more. Ravi even recently went in by himself, undercover with the Zombie Kill Squad, to prove he’s Team Z. That’s commitment, folks!
Shadowhunters’ Clary and Simon
Though #Climon shippers are thrilled these two besties finally got together, who knows how long the relationship between Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara) and Simon Lewis (Alberto Rosende) will last? It’s already on thin ice after the events of this week’s season return. Despite that, we know these two lifetime pals will work through anything to stay in each other’s lives – OTP or not.
June 8 marks National Best Friends Day, and we would like to take the time to honor some of television’s most underrated and underappreciated friendships—from Supergirl‘s Kara (Melissa Benoist) and Lena (Katie McGrath), to Shadowhunters‘ #Climon.
These duos’ storylines may not always center on their friendships with one another, but the bond they share is one of the many reasons we love them.
