‘Fresh Off the Boat’ Makes TV History as it Sails to UPtv in Syndication Deal

ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat returns for its fifth season on Friday, October 5, but the comedy starring Randall Park, Constance Wu, and Hudson Yang is already making waves.

On Labor Day, the comedy created by Nahnatchka Khan and loosely-inspired by the life of celebrity chef Eddie Huang, becomes the first network sitcom starring Asian Americans to reach syndication when it lands on its new home, UPtv.

Series star Constance Wu shared the news on Twitter, while also outlining her struggle to find roles and success in as an Asian American actress in Hollywood. In addition to her starring role on Fresh off the Boat, Wu stars in the upcoming film Crazy Rich Asians, based on the mega-popular novel by Kevin Kwan.

FOTB is heading into its 5th season as the 1st network show starring Asian Americans to reach syndication. That’s truly historic,” the actress makes a point to call out at the end of the post.

UP has licensed all four seasons of the series, plus the upcoming Season 5. The network will launch the family sitcom with a “Boatload of Fresh” Labor Day weekend marathon, where episodes will air Saturday, September 1, and Sunday, Sept. 2, from 7 pm–3 am ET and Monday, September 3, from 7–11 pm ET.

Fresh Off the Boat will then air regularly on Wednesdays from 8-11 pm ET, and Saturdays 7-11 pm ET, joining the network’s other family-friendly syndicated series, including: Home Improvement, Gilmore Girls, AFV, and Whose Line Is It Anyway?

The network also produces original series including Our Wedding Story, Expecting and Bringing Up Bates. UPtv’s EVP & General Manager Amy Winter says the network’s originals are focused on life’s biggest moments that are celebrated and shared by many families everywhere.”
