‘The Amazing Race’ Preview: Doug & Dylan Find Out Their Penalty for Last Place Finish
What To Know
- The eight remaining teams on The Amazing Race will be hit with a Double U-Turn vote on the November 4 episode.
- In TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek, host Phil Keoghan explains the twist and also reveals the penalty Doug Matter and Dylan Matter will be hit with.
- The grandfather and grandson team are receiving a penalty after finishing in last place on the most recent non-elimination leg of the race.
Doug Matter and Dylan Matter were last to the Pit Stop on Leg 6 of The Amazing Race Season 39. But when they arrived, host Phil Keoghan informed them it was a non-elimination leg, which meant they would get to continue in the competition. However, they’ll have to face a penalty in Leg 7 because of their last place finish.
In TV Insider’s exclusive preview of the November 4 episode, Keoghan informs Doug and Dylan of how they’ll be penalized. The reveal came after all the teams traveled to Sri Lanka and met up with Keoghan for a Double U-Turn vote.
“Doug and Dylan, since you arrived last on the previous leg, your penalty is an automatic U-Turn,” Keoghan told the grandfather and grandson. He also reiterated the rules of a U-Turn, which requires a team to complete both sides of the Detour, rather than just one.

“You will be pleased to know, however, [that] two more teams will have a U-Turn that they’ll be facing,” Keoghan added. “So a total of three teams U-Turned. Yours is automatic. The other two, we’re going to vote for.”
With just eight pairs left in the race, getting hit with a U-Turn is certainly not ideal. “I was shocked,” Erin Taylor admitted. “We knew that it was going to happen, but it’s never the same until the actual moment comes.”
Doug, meanwhile, said, “That shook our confidence a little. We were up against some pretty tough racers, but to have two other people along for the ride gave us more of a fighting chance.”
On the November 4 episode, the contestants will vote for who they want U-Turned, and the two teams with the most votes will endure the penalty. Michelle Rozalski Patterson and Matt Patterson have been making a point to play the game without alliances, and they’ve been dominating the last few legs, but their strategy could come back to haunt them with this U-Turn twist.
