Newlyweds puts Téa Leoni and Tim Daly in the spotlight as Jeanie and James, but is their on-screen romance inspired by their real-life relationship?

It’s a question some viewers may have, but one that’s easily debunked as well. Below, we’re breaking down what you need to know about the inspiration behind Newlyweds‘ romance.

Is Newlyweds based on Téa Leoni & Tim Daly’s romance?

No, Newlyweds isn’t based on Téa Leoni and Tim Daly’s real-life relationship, despite what fans might theorize. Series co-creator and star Jamie Lee Curtis confirmed as much when she told us, “I heard this driver in New York mention that he had a new wife — a man in his 60s — and I was like, wait… that’s a sitcom about people in their sixties, early seventies who hook up and marry on a whim and what happens afterwards.”

How Did Téa Leoni & Tim Daly meet?

Téa Leoni and Tim Daly met while working together on CBS‘s former drama series Madam Secretary, in which she portrayed Elizabeth McCord, the secretary of state who would later become president. Daly portrayed Elizabeth’s husband, Henry McCord. The show aired for six seasons between 2014 and 2019, in which the duo starred in more than 100 episodes.

When did Téa Leoni & Tim Daly’s romance begin?

Leoni and Daly began dating in December of 2014 and married a little over ten years later in July 2025. Leoni recently recounted a story on Live With Kelly and Mark, where she recalled going to the same high school as Daly in Vermont. While he was a few years older, Leoni shared that a friend reminded her of an instance where she’d seen him act in a play and said, “I’m gonna marry that guy.” Little did she know, decades later, they would be.

So, while they may technically be newlyweds, Leoni and Daly’s romance isn’t the inspiration behind Newlyweds, the series. Yet the magic of their real-life romance breathes life into Jeanie and James’s later-in-life love story.

Newlyweds, Fridays, 8:30/7:30c, NBC
