What To Know

- They opened up to TV Insider about the fear of elimination and critiques from judge Shirley Ballas.
- Ali made it through to next week, while Tyler Cameron and Jackson Olson were sent home in a double elimination.
Tatyana Ali and her pro partner Jan Ravnik were the last team called safe during Horror Movie Night on Dancing With the Stars. Although they weren’t necessarily in the bottom three based on scores and votes, they were the last to find out they would be moving forward in the competition. Plus, they endured tough critiques from the judges, particularly guest judge Shirley Ballas, who used her 4 paddle to score their paso doble.
“It was a theatrical paso doble,” Ballas said, but added, “It had no recognizable paso doble. No twist turns…” As the audience chimed in with predictable groans and boos, Ballas dryly shot back, “Hang on. We might learn something…”
She continued, “We didn’t have enough flamenco style. I give you on the power and theatrics. [But] as a paso doble goes, it didn’t do it for me.” On a more positive note, the duo received 8s from judges Carria Ann Inaba, Derek Hough, and Bruno Tonioli, quite a contrast from Ballas’ score.

Along with last week’s score of 32, Ali and Ravnik had a combined total of 60 points (out of 80). But with help from viewer votes, they were able to make it through, while Jackson Olson and Emma Slater, along with Tyler Cameron and Sharna Burgess, were sent home in a double elimination.
“I didn’t know what was going to happen,” Ali told TV Insider. “It was nice to hear our name. That’s how this show is. Anything can happen.”
Ali was aware that she and Ravnik could arguably come under greater scrutiny from Ballas, as they performed a Latin dance and Ballas is known as the “Queen of Latin.”
“She’s won all kinds of championships,” Ali pointed out. “I was prepared for her to critique [us] and that’s what she did.”
Ravnik concurred that Ballas is an incredible judge. “We all know she is incredible in her field,” the dance pro said. “So, doing a Latin dance in front of her, yeah, it was terrifying.”
While getting the 4 wasn’t pleasant, Ravnik knows that Ballas was just delivering the truth. “As a pro, I’m going to take her critique and think about it,” he confirmed. “The next time that I’m doing a paso doble, I need to do something more.”
Moving ahead in the competition, Ali is looking forward to discovering new skills. “I’ve learned to do things that I never dreamed I’d be able to do,” she admitted. “I have been proud of myself at the end of every single night, independent of what the score is.”
Ravnik is also quite proud of the progress Ali has made. “I tell her that every day,” he gushed. “I tell everyone that every day.”
It’s quite possible that Ali’s getting some votes from fans of The Young and the Restless. The actress played Roxie on the CBS soap for approximately six years, starting in 2007.
“Roxie was dating Devon [Bryton James],” Ali recalled. “They shoot Y&R on this lot [where DWTS shoots]. Roxie was interesting. I feel like as soon as Devon came into all this money, Roxie was like, ‘You’re not real anymore!’ That’s when Roxie left the show.”

Why would they choose one couple out to be the only ones to do a Latin dance? Especially knowing that Shirley was the judge this week Seemed unfair to me
