‘Hit the 8’: Abby Lee Miller & Cathy Nesbitt-Stein Tease ‘Snarky’ Reunion on New Show

Abby Lee Miller and Cathy Nesbitt Stein

Nearly 10 years after Abby Lee Miller and Cathy Nesbitt-Stein last starred on a television show (Dance Moms) together, the former rivals are back for a new competition series: Abby vs. Cathy: Hit the 8. This time, they’re serving on the same judges’ panel for the ShortVydz shortform series.

The show’s two-to-four minute episodes are designed for mobile viewing. The contest begins with 128 dancers from ages eight to 16, who face off in seven rounds. Miller and Nesbitt-Stein have to work together to decide who moves on and who goes home in the single-elimination bracket, and with no host moderating, there’s going to be some disagreements.

“There were dancers that we agreed on and then there were dancers that we didn’t agree on, and that’s the beauty of it,” Nesbitt-Stein tells TV Insider. “I think Abby and Cathy’s legacy is to be snarky with each other because we do it so well.”

Miller agrees that the show got “snarky” at times, noting, “[There were] a lot of thing I didn’t agree with and she didn’t agree with what I wanted, but as it gets down, you start to see the technique. And both of us … as far as dance teachers go, it’s all about the technique. … A lot of kids we gave corrections and it went in one ear and out the other, like [with] the original cast of Dance Moms!”

Nestbitt-Stein says one of the “disagreements” between her and Miller was over a male dancer. “Abby happened to like one kid that put me to sleep,” she says, with Miller grinning, “He was cute! He was blond. He looked like an L.A. surfer boy and I thought he would be great for the image of dance.”

The ladies promise that fans will get what they know and love from their relationship, but note that the arguing isn’t forced this time around. “What was really refreshing for us was that it wasn’t expected that we cause this huge thing,” Nesbitt-Stein explains. “It was organic, for me, to disagree with Abby. I could be funny, she could be funny, and we put our spin on it, but it wasn’t an agent of having to do this and, ‘You have to create this.'”

Miller agrees, adding, “It wasn’t like anybody had a knife to our throat saying, ‘You have to do this. You have to disagree with her.’ It was not a cutthroat, catfight environment.” Nesbitt-Stein also says, “I think we can be funny-rude to each other and not malicious-rude.”
