What To Know

  • James Carville argues that even if Democrats win control of Congress, Trump would veto everything.
  • He suggests Democrats focus on voting for popular measures to put Trump in a politically awkward position.
  • Carville also urged Democrats to investigate corruption in the Trump administration to embarrass the president.

Democratic strategist James Carville believes Democrats would struggle to pass legislation even if they regain control of both the House and Senate in the upcoming midterm elections.

However, Carville, who served as lead strategist on Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign, said Democrats have other ways to embarrass President Donald Trump. The political pundit made the comments on CNN on Friday (October 23), when host Brianna Keilar asked him how Democrats could govern with Trump in power.

“Well, first of all, Congress can’t do anything. I mean, he’ll veto everything,” Carville said, per The Huffington Post. “What they need to do is pick out five things and vote on them that he won’t sign.”

This comes after recent polls forecast a “blue wave” in the November elections, which would see Democrats taking control of the House and the Senate. Trump, however, told reporters last week that he’d “veto everything.”

“I think the Republicans are going to win — but if there was gridlock, what happens is I veto everything, and then the Democrats come and want to make a deal,” the president stated.

Carville said the first thing Democrats need to do is “ban stock trades by members of Congress… it’s low-hanging fruit, do it, corruption is a huge issue out there, show that you take it seriously.”

He said Democrats should also raise the minimum wage and make it easier for employees to unionize. “And get out of Iran, like, yesterday,” he added.

“Now they can pass it. Trump won’t sign it, but you can’t govern a congressional party, in effect, can’t govern, if the executive can have veto power and the judicial, the Supreme Court, is rigged against you,” Carville explained. “But do everything you can to put him on the spot. Do everything you can to embarrass him.”

He also said Democrats need to “investigate the hell out of his corruption… these stories are unbelievable; I was reading Vanity Fair, I mean, $700 billion. The corruption we have in the executive branch right now is greater than all the corruption we’ve ever had combined in history.”

“That’s Congress’ job to point that out,” Carville continued. “And I think they will.”
