Erin Napier is giving fans a glimpse into her kids’ homeschooling journey.
“First 9 weeks of homeschool has been so good for us as a family. We made some curriculum changes for efficiency and our days are moving like a well oiled machine now,” the Home Town star shared in a Tuesday, October 20, Instagram post.
Erin shares her two daughters, Helen and Mae, with her husband, Ben Napier. The post featured a clip of Helen lining up note cards in the order of the historical events they cover. “I couldn’t have done this in high school, but Ben is the best history teacher ever,” Erin gushed about her third-grader. “[She’s] learning how to properly write short essays, memorizing lots of poetry, finished Pippi Longstocking, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride and now reading The Hundred Dresses, building fires on her own, hosting a fall party for 20 of their friends, learning the 50 states and capitals, multiplication drills, and learning about mammals and the nervous system.”
As for her kindergartener, Erin wrote, “Mae is reading independently, creating a new kind of animal found in the ocean (axoturtle!!), making a pumpkin painting book report of her favorite, Make Way for Ducklings, and figuring out where in the world she is on a map.”
Erin got candid about the ups and downs of homeschooling, writing, “It’s been hard work and a few late nights planning this year, but it’s also the most fun I have ever had as a parent. Most of my very best friends in the world have brilliant kids who go to traditional school and they love their schools so much. It is working beautifully for them.”

She continued, “For us, this slots in beautifully with our schedule and satisfies our need for more family time. One day they may want to go to traditional school again but until then we gonna be out here loving our ‘weirdo homeschooler’ era!”
Erin’s post also featured recent photos of her kids spending time with their dogs, reading, and working on their school assignments.
Fans opened up about their own homeschooling experiences in the post’s comments, with one user writing, “That’s awesome. As a former educator I can say wholeheartedly that there is not a one size fits all. You have found what’s best for your girls and you’re doing amazing.”
Another fan added, “It’s not weirdo because it’s perfect for your family. Those days of stereotyping homeschoolers are over. Enjoy! Best years of my life were teaching my kiddos.”
Someone else shared, “I am so impressed! You and Ben have chosen to raise your girls in a way that works for all of you and they are clearly thriving. As a person who worked 30 years in education and has a daughter currently teaching 8th grade math, I can tell you that your girls are very lucky to be learning the way they are. And hurray for teaching cursive!!!”
Erin confirmed that her kids’ schooling for the year began while revealing that Home Town Season 11 had started filming via Instagram in August. “Easing back into school with rapid fire multiplication facts. 8×4 is harder to remember than all the others,” Erin wrote while taking fans through a day of filming the HGTV series.
