‘The View’: Joy Behar Shares Long-Awaited Health Update Via Whoopi Goldberg
Joy Behar has been absent from The View for the entirety of October thus far, and other than revealing the reason for her health hiatus from the show — namely, that she injured her shoulder and had to be off air since October 1 — details about her current condition have been slim.
However, on Tuesday’s (October 13) live show, the cohosts finally sent another update on her recovery from a dislocated shoulder for moderator Whoopi Goldberg to share with viewers.
At the start of the show, Goldberg dealt with this matter of housekeeping first, saying, “I bring you a message from Madame Joy Behar. She says, ‘Thanks to everyone who inquired about my recovery. If I was still 21, I’d have bounced back the next day. But since I am an old bat, recuperating takes a bit longer. I plan to be back next week to fill everyone in on all the gory details.'”
Goldberg then offered her own message to Behar, saying, “And we wait for you because we miss you.”
Behar’s initial injury was announced on October 1 while Goldberg was still on temporary hiatus to film her new drama movie for Netflix, and so Sunny Hostin was the one to step up as moderator in their stead. She explained at the time, “So Whoopi [Goldberg] is still out filming a movie, and unfortunately, our dear friend Joy dislocated her shoulder. Yeah, so she’s recovering and will be back soon. So the two OGs are out today. So apparently, the job went to the next oldest, or let’s say seasoned, cohost. I like seasoned better.” Sara Haines was the next to fill in for Behar and Goldberg before Goldberg returned to her seat, even filling in for Behar on her usual Friday off.
Behar, whose 84th birthday was celebrated by the cohosts while she was still out earlier this month, is the only current cohost who appeared on the show’s inaugural season. When Season 30 premiered, Behar celebrated a major career milestone, as announced by Goldberg: “Joy is also celebrating a milestone. She has been here for 28 out of the 30 seasons, which means she has now officially hosted more seasons of an American talk show than any other woman,” Goldberg said. In response to the announcement, Behar joked, “All I can say is that I was here when the show was in black and white, and Barbara Walters, I said to Barbara, ‘We’re going to get old on the show.’ She said, ‘You’ve got to get old anyway.'”
