‘Fire Country’ Premiere Sneak Peek: Bode Meets Olivia Thirlby’s CJ

Olivia Thirlby as CJ Ryan and Max Thieriot as Bode Leone — 'Fire Country' Season 5 Premiere "Founders' Day"

Uh-oh, Bode (Max Thieriot) doesn’t seem to be making the best first impression on the newest firefighter coming to Station 42 (eventually), CJ (new series regular Olivia Thirbly) in Fire Country Season 5. TV Insider has an exclusive sneak peek of their meeting in the Friday, October 9, premiere.

Bode comes across CJ’s setup in the forest and immediately tells her to put her campfire out. “Happy?” she asks. “Really, you’re giving me attitude?” he retorts. “Sorry, but we have fuel everywhere. There’s dry winds, low humidity.” She tells him, “OK, buddy, yeah, I get it. I know all about fire danger. Before you come any closer, you got some ID or something? Prove to me you’re really with Cal Fire.”

Watch the full sneak peek above to see what she arms herself with, as well as how she reacts when he remarks on the Pennsylvania license plate on her car.

When CJ first meets Bode here, her opinion is simple; Thirlby tells us: “Definitely suspicion. Suspicion. CJ has her reasons that you will learn. She has her reason to be suspicious about an unexpected firefighter coming to surprise her.”

As for what brings her to Edgewater, it’s “an accident. She’s just passing through. I’m not sure if she even knows that she’s in Edgewater when she finds herself there,” the new series regular admits. “It’s just a one-night stop on the way, a bit of a road trip that she’s taking. But then what keeps her in Edgewater, that’s a whole other conversation.”

When we spoke to Max Thieriot about the new season, he noted that CJ is “a different firefighter than we’re used to.”

He explained, “She’s a little bit of a fish out of water, which is kind of fun. But I think more than anything, why she is a key piece to the station is the approach that she brings to firefighting, the attitude that she brings. And sometimes you need somebody who’s looking from the outside in because all these people are clearly looking from the inside out, and they’ve been there, and so it’s hard. Perspective is just so different. She offers a different perspective, but also comes with a lot of skill and a lot of confidence and just real ability. She’s a little bit of a square peg in a round hole, but I think at the same time, that’s maybe what the station is needing.”
