Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, and Cole Hauser want to bring their Yellowstone spinoffs, Marshals and Dutton Ranch, together in a crossover, but Grimes will have to catch up on Dutton Ranch before they can get back in the saddle.

The Marshals star tells TV Insider that he hasn’t had a chance to watch Dutton Ranch yet, and he’s keeping it on the back burner on purpose while his spinoff is actively filming. He explains why.

“I have not watched it yet. I will. It’s not that I don’t want to; I just haven’t yet,” Grimes tells us ahead of the Marshals Season 2 premiere on Sunday, October 4. Because Marshals and Dutton Ranch are so different in style and format — and because they each progress Dutton family history in different ways that are so far unconnected — it’s better for his creative process not to tune in yet.

“I almost felt like watching it while I was shooting this might kind of paint and color in my brain that I don’t need right now,” Grimes explains. “We’re doing such a different show, and they’re trying to do a continuation of Yellowstone, where Marshals is a different format, a different pace, a different tone. It’s obviously got a procedural element, and so [I’m] trying to really, really stick with what we’re doing over here. I will definitely watch Dutton Ranch at some point.”

He agrees that a Dutton Ranch binge is best for him to do in the Marshals off-season (they’re still filming the second season as of the time of publication).

Marshals Season 2 picks up right where the Season 1 finale left off, with Kayce (Grimes) trying to save his son, Tate (Brecken Merrill), from Tom Weaver (Chris Mulkey), who kidnapped the teen after Kayce wouldn’t sell his East Camp land. Dutton Ranch Season 1 also ended with Beth (Reilly) and Rip’s (Hauser) adopted son, Carter (Finn Little), being kidnapped by their enemies, but the similarities are a coincidence.

In our Marshals Season 2 Fall Preview, Grimes told TV Insider that he and Reilly feel a Dutton Ranch and Marshals crossover will be necessary in the future.

“It’s not out of the question that we might have some sort of crossover at some point,” Grimes said. “Beth’s basically Kayce’s only living family member other than Tate. It would make sense that down the line we’d at least talk.”

“[Kelly and I have] texted about it back and forth a lot,” he added, “talked about how it’d be fun and necessary for our story arcs, however they’re going to end.”

There is a slight joining of the worlds in Marshals Season 2, however. Grimes told us that his Yellowstone stunt double, Jared Warrack, is now his stunt double on Marshals Season 2. He couldn’t work on the first season because he was the stunt coordinator on Dutton Ranch. They keep things in the filming family.

Marshals, Season 2 Premiere, Sunday, October 4, 8:30/7:30c CBS
