Agents on the Run in ‘Slow Horses,’ Scrubbing Back In, Off to the ‘Race,’ High Stakes on ‘Ted Lasso’

Slow Horses

In the world of spy fiction, no one’s actually dead until you see the body for yourself. Outcast Slough House agent River (Jack Lowden) just got a reminder of that trope when he found his presumed-dead Season 1 partner, Sid Baker (House of the Dragon‘s Olivia Cooke), alive and not so well, hiding in his house. There’s not much time for a reunion when they realize the assassins who’ve already taken down several ex-Slow Horses are on their trail. The chase is equal parts suspense and slapstick as River and Sid go on the run, while fellow Slow Horses Standish (Saskia Reeves) and Shirley (Aimee-Ffion Edwards) scramble to locate more of their former colleagues before it’s too late.

Scrubs

Be still, our Sacred Heart — as in Hospital, where the daffy docs are back for a second season of the rebooted medical sitcom, opening with back-to-back episodes. In the first, J.D. (Zach Braff) turns to his besties Turk (Donald Faison) and Elliot (Sarah Chalke) for help in treating Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley), whose autoimmune illness hasn’t responded to treatment. The second episode finds them all facing new challenges as mentors of the next generation of cutups. Followed by back-to-back episodes launching the 18th season of Shark Tank (9/8c and 10/9c), with guest sharks including Jimmy “MrBeast” Donaldson, Beast Industries CEO Jeff Housenbold and fashion entrepreneurs Erin and Sara Foster.

The Amazing Race

The 39th season of the Emmy-winning around-the-world competition opens in Vancouver, where host Phil Keoghan surprises the 13 new teams with a twist: an Express Pass for each team to use strategically, because the advantage expires after the sixth leg. After jumping 200 feet off the catwalk of Vancouver’s BC Stadium, the remaining teams will move on to Madrid in the premiere’s second half, airing Thursday. The teams include U.S. Women’s National Team soccer alums Ali Krieger and Joanna Lohman, plus an assortment of siblings, married couples, parents with offspring, and at the age extremes, Dylan and Doug, a 19-year-old college student racing with his 73-year-old grandfather, a retired fire chief.

Ted Lasso

There are cheers and tears in an emotionally pivotal episode of the endearing comedy, with the Richmond women’s soccer club facing a “season-defining match” in Bristol that could either secure the team a promotion or send them away with heartbreak. With so much at stake, Ted (Jason Sudeikis) invites pub owner Mae (Annette Badland) along on the team bus, while Keeley (Juno Temple) stays behind for personal reasons. Can the Lady Greyhounds step up when it counts?

Unmasking a Monster: Aileen Wuornos

The true-crime channel has found a new way to tell the story of Aileen Wuornos, the female serial killer who was executed in Florida in 2002 after being convicted in the deaths of seven men. Portrayed most famously by Oscar winner Charlize Theron in the movie Monster and most recently by Sarah Paulson as part of the Lizzie Borden installment of Netflix’s Monster, Wuornos is once again brought to life in a hybrid of documentary and docudrama. The three-part series (airing in full over three hours) incorporates cutting-edge digital replication and special visual effects to create a three-dimensional mask providing a digital likeness of Wuornos that was laid over actor Morag Peacock. The docuseries uses verified transcripts and first-hand testimony to offer what is billed as a new perspective on Wuornos’s life, crimes and capture.

• Major League Baseball Wild Card Series: Day 2 of the best-of-three series begins with the Phillies vs. Braves (2 pm/ET, NBC and Peacock), followed by the White Sox vs. Astros (5 pm/ET, NBCSN and Peacock), Red Sox vs. Yankees (8 pm/ET, NBC and Peacock) and Cubs vs. Padres (10 pm/ET, NBCSN and Peacock).
• Survivor (8/7c, CBS): An injury at camp could send a castaway home. Then at Tribal Council, a player tries a move never before seen to try to save an ally.
• The Floor (8/7c, Fox): The new Power Shot advantage, in which a contestant can become a human “randomizer” and pick the next persons to come off the floor, is put into play for the first time. Followed by a new episode of 99 to Beat (9/8c).
• South Park (10/9c, Comedy Central): The newly rebranded South America returns with a new episode in which Butters takes a stand against the data centers being built by billionaires in their neighborhoods.
• Ghost Adventures (10/9c, Discovery): Zak Bagans and his crew of paranormal investigators return for a new season, with their first stop a Las Vegas warehouse with a sordid mob past that’s now being used as a horror-themed escape room.

ON THE STREAM:

• Brothers (streaming on Apple TV): There’s conflict on the McConaughey ranch in the meta-comedy when Ma Mac (Holland Taylor) declares she has had enough of Woody (Woody Harrelson) and his rowdy clan: “My insides are streaming like a crawfish boil,” she quips as she demands they leave Texas. But Uncle Woody’s got a plan to win over his best bed and maybe-bro Matthew, and especially his kids.
• Last Seen (streaming on Apple TV): After a shocking showdown and shooting, the Australian thriller flashes back 15 years to reveal the tragic circumstances that led Henry (Brendan Cowell) and Jenna (Maxine Peane) to raise little Maggie (aka their Sarah) as their own.
• The Widower: ‘Til Death Do Us Part (streaming on Netflix): A true-crime documentary follows a journalist and a detective as they dig into the sordid history of Thomas Randolph, accused of murdering his sixth wife (three of his other exes were also dead).
• Food Samurai (streaming on Disney+): A six-part docuseries charts the journey of discovery of Michelin-starred French chef Mory Sacko when he travels to Japan to learn new techniques from local masters to prepare the perfect bento.
• The Challenge: Cutthroat (streaming on Paramount+): Two-time UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevcenko visits the Challengers in Thailand, surprising them with a Trial by Combat.
• Sacrifice (streaming on Paramount+): The long-delayed second season of the legal drama stars Paula Patton as L.A. entertainment lawyer Daniella Hernadez.
