The character of Cathy Ames has been the source of intense literary conversations for decades. The Netflix limited series, with Florence Pugh stepping into the role, has reignited the debates over Cathy and what she represents.

There’s no denying Cathy’s cruelty. Many see her as only a “malformed soul,” as author John Steinbeck wrote, and any deviation from that portrayal misses Steinbeck’s intentions. Netflix’s East of Eden dives headfirst into its own interpretation of Cathy beyond the book’s narrator and tries to peel back the layers of this manipulative, often terrifying, and deeply complicated woman.

“I feel so protective of her,” Pugh told TV Insider. “First of all, I feel really honored that I had the opportunity to tackle her, but having lived with her for such a long time, I’m very much aware that people aren’t going to see her in the same way that we do.”

She added, “But I’m also so grateful that we got to give our version over and to breathe some love and life into this woman who, yes, makes some awful choices, but also as a product of her time and a product of the trauma that she experienced, and it’s not as simple as calling her evil or bad. She is a full human that is dealing with an incredible lot from the moment that she’s born.”

Co-showrunner and executive producer Jeb Stuart previously told TV Insider that the Netflix version wanted to show the “lack of agency” women had in the time period and Cathy’s “need to be free of a life defined by a man and the limited options available to obtain that freedom.”

The 2026 take on East of Eden comes more than 70 years after the book was written. Cathy isn’t just a one-dimensional villain in the series, which Stuart noted would have been an easy avenue to take. “She’s a product of what’s happened to her,” he said, adding that Pugh’s performance will allow viewers to see Cathy in a way they haven’t before.
