‘NCIS’: Michael Weatherly Addresses Crossover Possibility

With Michael Weatherly back on NCIS for a season-long arc and Mark Harmon appearing on the prequel Origins in all 10 Season 3 episodes, the question has to be asked: Will there be a crossover to get Tony and Gibbs together onscreen again?

So far, nothing’s been announced, though the NCIS: Origins Season 3 trailer showing Harmon’s Gibbs back at the office does suggest that it could very easily happen. But when TV Insider spoke with Michael Weatherly about his return, he certainly seemed game.

“I feel like I’m in a crossover with Tony & Ziva and the original NCIS,” he admitted. “My personal hope and vision for what could happen down the road in this season would be that we do see some reunions and both emotional and action-packed and fun.”

And he’s not just talking about with Origins. There’s also NCIS: New York, the new spinoff starring LL COOL J and Scott Caan, airing between the two Tuesdays, beginning on October 6.

“I mean, I would love to work with Scott Caan. I think he is a fantastic actor, and I love LL COOL J. I mean, enough said, that guy is — I saw his work ethic, when I went over and did my, by the way, pretty heavy episode of NCIS: LA; that’s how I got to be friends with Eric Christian Olsen, who is now working on NCIS: Origins. I would love to explore that,” Weatherly said.

“It feels like the timing of all of this very tuned in and it’s very right. Everything is lined up for the correct things to happen,” he continued.

Weatherly recalled NCIS having “the great benefit” of taking JAG‘s time slot; the former is a spinoff of the latter.

As he sees it, “it’s time for a renaissance of linear television,” given how popular streaming has become in recent years. “As LL COOL J would say, ‘Don’t call it a comeback.’ But I’m going to say it’s a renaissance, and I think we’re ready for it,” he said.
