The Saturday Night Live Season 52 premiere cold open roasted President Donald Trump‘s bromance with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani during a nor’easter affecting the East Coast. In the process, it also mocked Trump’s special aide, Natalie Harp.
On Saturday, September 26, SNL Season 52 kicked off with a sketch titled “Trump Mamdani Cold Open.” The skit began with Mamdani (Ramy Youssef) recording a social media dance informing New Yorkers about staying safe amid a nor’easter.
Suddenly, Mamdani got an unexpected visit from his “best friend,” Trump (James Austin Johnson).
“For some reason that no one can figure out, I really, really like you,” Trump declared. He added, “Somehow when I’m with you, I’m just firing on all cylinders. Maybe it’s because we’re both from Queens.”
To that, Mamdani pointed out, “I know. Isn’t it funny to think I could have grown up in one of your apartment buildings in Queens?”
“Not with that last name,” the POTUS said bluntly.
As Mamdani tried to subtly hint to Trump that he was busy and should probably head back to Washington, D.C., the president had no intention of leaving. He described their relationship as “like one of those unlikely animal friendships, like when a tiger gets together with a baby goat.”
The president also confessed that Mamdani appeared in most of his dreams. “I call you Mam-dreamy,” Trump said, a reference from Grey’s Anatomy. “Pick me. Choose me. Love me.”
From there, most of the skit focused on Trump’s “crazy week,” which included banning CNN, MS Now, and Politico from the White House press pool, hosting Chinese President Xi Jinping, and switching up his hair color.
“I kicked out the press, and hung out with the president of China, Xi,” Johnson’s Trump recapped. “And yeah, I went brunet. It’s fall!”
Additionally, Trump shared, “There was this crazy AI stuff too. I just had dinner with Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and Mark Zuckerberg. And it made me think, ‘Wow, RFK Jr.‘s probably right about those vaccines. I mean, the tizz in that room…. Maybe take a break from AI and start working on A-eye contact. Am I right?”
Toward the end of the SNL cold open, Trump’s special aide, Natalie Harp (Ashley Padilla), appeared after “running here from D.C. Weapons-style.” She also warned Mamdani, “If you hurt him, I will end you.”
Trump, meanwhile, pointed out, “She’s like the girl from Obsession, but blond.”
