‘Unsolved Mysteries’ Returns With ‘Unmasking the Tylenol Killer’ Doc

It took more than four decades, but a cold case has been solved with such a killer connection that it’s becoming a special edition of Unsolved Mysteries. The Roku Channel announced on Wednesday (September 23) that it will deliver the series’ first-ever feature-length documentary called Unmasking the Tylenol Killer next month.

The news follows a press conference held by Ada County Sheriff’s Office of Boise, Idaho, in which they announced the resolution of the cold case of the “Unknown Wanderer” and discovered a possible connection to the also-previously-unsolved 1982 Tylenol poisonings.

The 88-minute special Unsolved Mysteries movie will debut on The Roku Channel on Friday, October 9.

The official logline for the film tells us, “Unmasking the Tylenol Killer was revealed following Unsolved Mysteries’s press conference with the Ada County Sheriff’s Office today where they announced the resolution of one of Idaho’s longest-standing cold cases: the identity of the “Unknown Wanderer,” an unidentified man who died inside a Boise church in 1982. The announcement also unveiled a possible connection between this case and the 1982 Tylenol poisonings, an unsolved case that claimed seven lives in the Chicago area and remains one of the most significant unsolved crimes in U.S. history. The Ada County Sheriff’s Office worked closely with the Unsolved Mysteries team throughout the course of this investigation.”

What happened in the cases involved in Unmasking the Tylenol Killer?

In December 1982, an unknown man, who’d come be known as the “Unknown Wanderer,” was found dead of cyanide poisoning in the pews. He had a note with a fake name, William L. Toomey, and his true identity remained a secret for years.

Earlier that year, in Chicago, seven people died after their bottles of Tylenol were laced with cyanide. Now, Ada County Sheriff’s Detective Tim Cooper has pieced the cases together, contending that the “Unknown Wanderer” is actually the “Tylenol Killer.”
