Kimmel Mocks Trump For Booting Himself Off Air a Year After His Own Suspension

Jimmy Kimmel couldn’t help but point out the irony of President Donald Trump effectively taking himself “off the air” with his press ban on the one-year anniversary of his own suspension.

On Tuesday’s (September 22) edition of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the comedian explained how several major TV networks have stopped reporting from the press pool in solidarity with CNN, MS NOW, and Politico, the three outlets the president banned from the White House on Friday (September 18).

“I mentioned last night that as a result of Trump’s ban on CNN, MS NOW, and Politico, the major networks, including Fox, have decided to pull what is known as press pool coverage,” Kimmel said in his monologue. “The outlets take turns providing a live TV feed of all the president’s events. But then they have suspended that coverage in protest of the ban, which has to drive Trump even crazier than he already is.”

He continued, “There’s nothing this man loves more than being on television. And right now, thanks to his own dumb actions, the only camera at the White House is the Ring camera Melania had mounted on her bedroom door to keep him out of it.”

“If only they’d done this nine years ago, we might not be in this situation,” Kimmel quipped.

Later in the monologue, Kimmel highlighted the irony of Trump’s self-imposed TV exile by marking the one-year anniversary of his own suspension from ABC. Last September, Kimmel’s show was temporarily taken off the air due to backlash to a joke he made about the reaction to the Charlie Kirk assassination.

At the time, FCC chair Brendan Carr slammed Kimmel’s remarks, and the president also celebrated ABC “firing” the host. ABC didn’t actually fire Kimmel, though, and he returned to the air less than a week later.

“You know, one year ago tomorrow, we came back from when they bullied us off the air,” Kimmel said on Tuesday’s show. “That was a year ago. Never did I imagine that 12 months later, Trump would do the same thing to himself. He has no cameras following him around anymore. There are no microphones to record what he’s saying.”
