‘Jeopardy!’ Contestant Has Agonizing Loss After Getting Second Chance

A Jeopardy! contestant’s dream fell apart for a second time after they had an agonizing loss. The contestant got a second chance to be on the game show, but couldn’t secure a win.

Jennifer Leavey, from Ashland, Massachusetts, played against Lauren Schiebel, from Highstown, New Jersey, and Greg Fosheim, from Milbank, South Dakota, on September 22. Leavey, a technical writer, entered the game with a one-day total of $20,000.

Fosheim, a healthcare attorney, was called to be on Jeopardy! in 2025, but had an emergency that led to him not being able to participate, according to Dakota Broadcasting. Jeopardy! was nice enough to invite him back for another chance. The emergency was not mentioned. Warning: Spoilers for the Tuesday, September 22, episode of Jeopardy! ahead!

Fosheim had the lead by the first 15 clues with $2,600. When Schiebel, a fiber artist, found the Daily Double on clue 26, she had $3,000, only $200 off the lead.

She wagered $1,500 in “‘Of’ Books.” The clue read, “The title of this classic refers to the New England home of the mid-19th century Pyncheon family.” “What is the House of Mirth?” Schiebel answered incorrectly.

The game show contestant dropped down to $1,500 since the correct response was The House of the Seven Gables. She was only $100 ahead of Leavey.

By the end of the round, Fosheim still had the lead with $3,800. Leavey moved to second place with $2,200. Schiebel had $1,500.

In Double Jeopardy, Schiebel found the first DD on clue three. She had $1,900 and wagered $1,800 in “Differing By a Letter.” The clue was “Something that helps to keep your pool or aquarium clean & to hesitate.”

Schiebel didn’t have an answer, so she dropped down to $100. The correct response was filter and falter.

Fosheim had the lead of $13,400 when he found the final DD on clue 23. He wagered $4,000 in “Hold the Fort!”

The clue read, “You can take the Dixie Highway from Louisville to Bullion Boulevard to the visitors gate at this site.” “What is Fort Knox?” he answered correctly. This gave him a bigger lead with $17,400.

By the end of the round, Leavey pulled into the lead with $16,600. Foshein had $15,400. Schiebel was in third place with $2,900.

The Final Jeopardy category was “17th Century Authors.” The clue read, “A Mayo Clinic study regarding this poet’s health afflictions doubts glaucoma, suggesting retinal detachment instead.”

Two of the three contestants had the correct response. Schiebel wrote, “Who is Lord Byron?” That was incorrect. Since she wagered $0, she ended with $2,900.

Fosheim’s response was “Who is Milton?” as in John Milton. He was correct and wagered $,1,201, giving him $16,601.

Leavey also had the correct response. She wagered $14,201, making her final total 430,801. She was now a two-day champion and will return for her third game on Wednesday. Her two-day total was $50,801.
