Judge Judy Shares Verdict on Lindsay Clancy Trial & What Should Happen Next

Judge Judy Sheindlin has presided over many trials throughout her career, both on screen and off, but the recent outcome of the Lindsay Clancy murder case is one even she struggles to understand.

Clancy’s triple-murder trial ended in a mistrial earlier this month after the jury remained deadlocked after approximately 38 hours of deliberation across seven days. Clancy stood accused of strangling her three young children to death in January 2023. Her defense argued that she was legally insane at the time due to postpartum psychosis.

On Thursday, TMZ asked Sheindlin if Clancy should face another trial after the jurors failed to reach a unanimous decision. “I think there’s a danger in that, in not retrying,” the former Judge Judy host said.

However, when asked for her view on the outcome, Sheindlin said it would take serious time to come up with an appropriate, considered answer. “I can’t give you a two-minute answer on that,” she told the outlet.

When asked if she believed Clancy should have been found guilty, Sheindlin responded, “There’s no question, my dear, that she killed her children. The only question is, is there an excuse for it? Make up your own mind on that one.”

Clancy’s defense lawyer, Kevin Reddington, previously told Good Morning America that 11 jurors were in favor of an acquittal, but one single male juror voted for a conviction. “I would defend that individual’s right to be a holdout forever; that’s part of our judicial system. I respect that and I would certainly defend his right to do that,” Reddington stated.

While Clancy and her defense team do not deny that she killed her three children in 2023, they have argued that she is not criminally responsible for the deaths because she had postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings. Prosecutors, by contrast, insist she acted intentionally.

Nancy Mace, who serves as U.S. representative for South Carolina’s 1st congressional district, recently told TMZ DC that Clancy should be publicly executed. “She should get the death penalty,” she said. “It should be a warning to women everywhere – don’t kill your kids. If people can get away with murdering children, what else can they do?”

When asked about Mace’s call for Clancy to face the death penalty, Sheindlin responded, “I think it’s ridiculous.”

Sheindlin starred on her self-titled courtroom series, Judge Judy, for 25 seasons from 1996 to 2021. She went on to lead the Prime Video spinoff Judy Justice, which will air its final episode later this year. She confirmed her onscreen retirement earlier this year.
