What To Know

  • Outlander: Blood of My Blood returns September 18.
  • Find out where Season 1 left Ellen and Brian as well as Julia and Henry.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood‘s second season is nearly here, and after more than a year off the air, fans may want a refresher on where things left off with the leading couples.

As viewers will recall, the prequel series chronicles the romances of Brian (Jamie Roy) and Ellen (Harriet Slater), and Julia (Hermione Corfield) and Henry (Jeremy Irvine), the parents of the flagship series Outlander‘s leading couple, Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe). While the series, inspired by the works of Diana Gabaldon, takes some creative liberties, Blood of My Blood was originally teased as a drama plotting parallel love stories, with Brian and Ellen’s unfolding in 18th-century Scotland and Julia and Henry’s in World War I England.

Ultimately, Season 1 reveals that their paths cross when Julia and Henry have a car accident in Scotland and stumble upon the standing stones at Craigh Na Dun, sending them through time and space into the 18th century themselves. But the couple is separated, with Henry finding employment with the Grant clan and Julia being delivered to Castle Leathers, where she endures the horrors of Lord Lovat (Tony Curran), going so far as to consummate a relationship with him to hide her pregnancy from Henry and protect her child.

Meanwhile, Lovat’s bastard son, Brian Fraser, isn’t meant to mingle with Clan MacKenzie, but he can’t help the magnetic pull he feels towards Ellen, the eldest daughter. Their forbidden romance becomes more complicated by Ellen’s brothers, Colum (Seamus McLean Ross) and Dougal (Sam Retford), who pressure her to marry as they take control of the clan in their father’s wake.

As Season 1 came to a close, Ellen is moments away from marrying Malcolm Grant (Jhon Lumsden), but Brian’s arrival changes plans as she opts to run away with him, leaving her brothers to scramble to rectify the situation, especially after Brian kills Malcolm in self-defense. Ultimately, Dougal marries Malcolm’s sister, Maura (Bobby Rainsbury), to maintain ties between the clans, and just as Brian and Ellen believe they have their chance at a happy ending together, the lighting of the fiery cross indicates war on the horizon.

And while Julia and Henry reunite with the direct help of Brian and Ellen, they attempt to make a run for the stones, with her escaping Lovat and him escaping his role as Clan Grant’s bladier. But Arch Bug (Terence Rae) is hot on their trail when they reach Craigh Na Dun, and with only so many gemstones in their possession, it’s clear that both of them won’t be time traveling with their young son.

But fans are left wondering which of them will tumble through time in Season 2. Thankfully, the trailer teases the answer, hinting at Henry’s journey through time in Season 2. Let us know what you hope to see as Blood of My Blood‘s story continues to unfold, and stay tuned for updates as the series returns.
