‘Chad Powers’: Glen Powell & More on Season 2 Finale Cliffhangers
Chad Powers amps up the stakes as Season 2 delivers the latest twists in Russ Holliday’s (Glen Powell) story, with his secret being further uncovered and hidden by surprising parties. Warning: Spoilers for the Chad Powers Season 2 finale!
After Ricky (Perry Mattfeld) learned the truth about disgraced quarterback Russ’s ruse as Chad, she went along with the lie to help steer the South Georgia Catfish to victory in order to maintain their legacy and that of her father, Coach Hudson (Steve Zahn). As Season 2 came to a close, though, things got a heck of a lot more complicated as Russ was blackmailed into losing a major game so disgruntled backup quarterback Gerry (Colton Ryan) could win big on a bet and destroy Chad’s image.
When Ricky and Russ’ best friend, Danny (Frankie Rodriguez), realized this, Danny sought out help from wealthy booster Tricia (Wynn Everett), exposing Chad’s true identity and seeking her help in protecting the lie for the sake of the team. With her money and support, the Catfish could go far, but it also forced Russ to keep up the lie, which could be exposed to even more people.

After going against Gerry’s request and going on to win the game with Ricky’s support, Russ ended up sharing a long-awaited kiss with her after a swoony love confession post-game. The only problem? As things were getting hot and heavy, Ricky began peeling the prosthetics off of Russ’s face just as her dad, Coach Hudson, burst through the door, catching them in a compromising position.
While it’s unclear if Coach Hudson realized it’s Russ Holliday behind the disguise quite yet, there’s much to consider, knowing he’s resolved to retire after his heart attack from Season 1, leaving Coach Byrd (Quentin Plair) in a potentially advantageous position. Plus, Ricky recently accepted a coaching position in Syracuse, but will she actually go?
As for what pushed Russ and Ricky over that line from teammates to potential lovers, Mattfeld said, “I think part of why that finale scene is so heartbreaking is because… if she does leave, then what? If people do find out, then what? There’s just more of this devastation of what would happen if it ends?”
Powell added, “When you’re a football player [with] the wins and losses… you’re a function of a program, right? You’re only really as good as your last game, and I do believe that… the essence of a good relationship is two people that really root for each other, even if it sort of is tragic. She’s believing this is their last game together, but she’s rooting for him to cross that line, and he’s rooting for her to be the person out in front.”
Where it will lead viewers in a potential third season remains to be seen. As for what Coach Hudson might suspect from the shocking finale scene, Zahn said, “It’s interesting because it’s left very vague. I’m just a blur in the background.” Still, Zahn admits regarding Coach Hudson’s reaction to Ricky and Chad crossing that romantic line, “I don’t know if it would be that shocking to him because I’ve already alluded to it… I’m not an idiot. I just wanna win a football game.”
