What To Know

  • Fox News host Jessica Tarlov challenged Vice President JD Vance’s claims that Donald Trump is making homeownership more accessible.
  • Tarlov highlighted that 70 percent of Americans believe Trump is not focused on lowering costs or caring about ordinary people.
  • She also rebutted Greg Gutfeld’s defense of past efforts to address government fraud.

Fox News host Jessica Tarlov pulled apart claims made by Vice President JD Vance on Friday (August 21), where he said that Donald Trump is ousting “fraudsters and criminals” and making homeownership “accessible again to our young people.”

Tarlov, a political strategist for the Democratic Party who serves as The Five‘s lone liberal commentator, dismantled Vance’s claims on Friday’s show. “He says ‘we’re finally seeing that American dream of homeownership become accessible again to our young people,'” Tarlov said. The average age of homeownership just hit 40 years old in this country.”

She continued, “Mortgage rates are up. Construction is down… that’s directly related to the war in Iran.”

Gas prices in the U.S. have surged since Trump began his war with Iran back in February due to the closing of the Strait of Hormuz. The Wall Street Journal previously reported that rising fuel prices have taken a significant hit on the construction business, leading to much higher shipping costs for materials.

Tarlov continued to quote Vance’s recent speech, saying, “He also said, ‘I believe in November we will face a choice. Do we demand that our government serve us and our children rather than fraudsters and criminals? Do we demand that the American president fight for the American people first?'”

She responded by bringing up Trump’s cratering poll numbers, noting, “70 percent of Americans say Donald Trump isn’t focused on lowering costs, doesn’t care about people like me, and 70 percent say that he has businesses influence how he makes political decisions.”

Trump made over $1 billion in cryptocurrency ventures last year, according to a 900-plus-page disclosure form released in June. Almost $600 million of that came in income from World Liberty Financial, the company he founded with his sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump. Alongside other ventures and merchandising, Trump made at least $2.2 billion since his return to office.

“JD Vance is describing his own government,” Tarlov added. “The ‘fraudsters and the criminals.’ And Americans will vote [in the midterms] based on that.”

Fellow panelist Greg Gutfeld tried to counter Tarlov’s points, saying that liberals didn’t care about fraud when Elon Musk‘s now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency was aiming to clear up wasteful public spending. “He was going after all that fraud,” Gutfeld said.

“He was firing all the scientists, everyone who knew something, and then had to beg for them to come back,” Tarlov fired back.
