It is a truth universally acknowledged that every generation will have a new adaptation of Jane Austen‘s Pride and Prejudice to enjoy. More than 20 years after Joe Wright‘s beloved version of the classic tale dazzled on the big screen with Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, Netflix is at the helm with a new six-part limited series.

Author Dolly Alderton, the show’s writer and executive producer, is well aware of the expectations in bringing Pride and Prejudice to the screen once again. “It has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life,” she says.

The Crown‘s Emma Corrin steps into the role of Elizabeth Bennet, the headstrong and clever young woman who defies her mother (Olivia Colman) and society by yearning for true love over financial security. With no male Bennet heirs, Mrs. Bennet seeks to match her five daughters to men with considerable means. For the Bennet matriarch, love is not a requirement for a marriage.

The first chapter of Elizabeth’s iconic romance with Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy (played by Slow Horses star Jack Lowden) famously doesn’t start off well. Their initial interaction is rife with tension and sets off their ill-conceived notions of one another. Elizabeth and Darcy are the blueprint for the enemies-to-lovers romance, and their evolution is the most delicious slow burn, filled with desires that can barely be contained.

The streamer’s 2026 adaptation of the literary classic has an exceptional ensemble cast that also includes Rufus Sewell, Freya Mavor, Daryl McCormack, Louis Partridge, Rhea Norwood, Jamie Demetriou, Siena Kelly and Fiona Shaw. Hopey Parish and Hollie Avery will make their screen debuts as Bennet siblings Mary and Kitty, respectively.

“I am so excited to reintroduce these hilarious and complicated characters to those who count Pride and Prejudice as their favorite book and those who are yet to meet their Lizzie and Mr. Darcy,” Alderton notes.

More than two centuries have passed since Pride and Prejudice was first published, and Austen’s work is more popular than ever. There’s no romance out there that can bewitch us quite like the love story between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy.

They keep trying to change Pride and Prejudice but the best version is the one made with Colin Firth

    And cannot be bettered.

Yes my thoughts exactly. Assume the overweight sister is Mary who wasn’t overweight in the book. Won’t be watching this one.

I love all Jane Austin books being made into films and series as it gives me an excuse to relive the book in different ways. I love to experience other people’s interpretations. Obviously some i like more than others but nevertheless I will enjoy the script. It’s so clever and witty.

How wonderful to hear the kind of conversations they had in that time and that society.

I hope this version is hopeful like" The Other Bennet Sister". Ideally it will be a homage to the accuracy of the 1995 series and the beauty of the Joe Wright 2005 movie. If it resembles the 2022 disaster of Persuasion , it will bomb.

I wish they didn’t have a non-binary actor playing the very feminine role of Elizabeth.

Why does this matter to you? 🤔 Actors play space aliens and superheroes, and all kinds of roles that have nothing to do with their personal sexual orientation. 🤷‍♀️

        Tawney

Yes, but perhaps she is referring to affirmative action choice, which should Not determine casting. After all, the role should go to the best, not the PC. No?

Emma Corrin was a lovely Princess Diana in The Crown and I’m looking forward to seeing their work in P&P.

The film version is by far the best the costumes on the TV version are ridiculous

You should read the BBC book about the making of the TV series.. the costumes could not be more authentic..

Not at all. Plays have been performed afresh always. Novels can have different interpretations too. New actors should try their hand
