‘Jersey Shore’: What Happened to Lauren Sorrentino’s Brother? Family Tragedy, Explained

Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino opens his new rehab center on the August 13 episode of Jersey Shore: Family Vacation. After various rehab stints of his own, The Situation has been committed to his sobriety since December 2015, but the new center is also an extremely meaningful place for his wife, Lauren Sorrentino.

Not only has Lauren been a steady force in Mike’s life throughout his sobriety journey, but she and her family also dealt with the devastating loss of her brother, Christopher Pesce, because of addiction.

“When Mike struggled, I wasn’t just watching from the sidelines, I was ready to fight with him,” Lauren shared on Instagram when the new rehab center opened. “I wasn’t going to lose another person I loved to this disease.”

Who was Christopher Pesce?

Lauren’s brother grew up with her and her family in Holmdel, New Jersey. He was on his high school football team and attended the University of Maryland, where he majored in economics.

According to his obituary, “[Christopher] was a very creative and gentle soul. Christopher had a passion for creating his own music and was a natural entertainer. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed cheering on the Miami Dolphins with his father.”

In a 2018 Instagram post, Lauren expanded on her brother’s love of music. “He loved and lived for music & put his passion into working towards becoming a DJ,” she shared. “He introduced me to the world of edm, although I had always liked it, I was never a huge follower of the artists. Swedish House Mafia, Laidback Luke & Avicii were just a few of his idols. Since Chris’ passing these artists songs have become soundtracks to his life in my mind. I get a chill of goosebumps & a spiritual feeling anytime they come on along with a tearful understanding that he’s with me always and in a much better place.”

In addition to Lauren, Chris also had two other sisters, Melissa and Michelle, and was also survived by parents Laurence and MaryBeth Pesce.

What happened to Lauren Sorrentino’s brother?

Christopher was 25 years old when he died in 2013. “It happened suddenly & unexpectedly,” Lauren shared her 2018 post. She added in her 2026 post about the rehab center, “I lost my brother to addiction, and nothing prepares you for that kind of pain.”

When Lauren and Mike appeared on Hollywood Medium With Tyler Henry, she confirmed that her younger brother was living in a halfway house at the time of his death. Per The Asbury Park Press, Christopher’s residence was Oxford House in Rumson, New Jersey.

What was Christopher Pesce’s cause of death?

The Asbury Park Press reported that Christopher died from a heroin overdose. His official cause of death was acute heroin toxicity, according to a press release.

A man named Michael Renna, who was 25 at the time, was accused of supplying Christopher with the drugs. In 2015, Renna was charged with one count of first degree strict liability for drug induced deaths and one count of third degree distribution of a controlled dangerous substance.

Lauren previously opened up about Christopher’s struggles on an episode of Jersey Shore: Family Vacation. “I would just be angry with my brother all the time for what he was doing,” she admitted. “I’m like, ‘You came from a good family. You were given everything.’ I didn’t understand it. I would be angry and not talk to him. So, I feel like the last few years of his life when he was struggling, I felt like I turned my back on him because I didn’t know that was going to be the last years.”
