Bill Maher just slammed President Donald Trump for telling “1 trillion lies” but claimed that labeling Democratic socialists as “communist” is not one of them.

During the Friday, July 31 episode of Real Time With Bill Maher — and fresh off the show’s summer hiatus — the late-night host took aim at the Democratic Socialists of America during his “New Rule” segment.

“Donald Trump has told 1 trillion lies, but when he says the Democratic Socialists of America are actually communist, that’s not one of them,” Maher proclaimed. “And it’s not hard to prove it just by quoting the DSA and their candidates.”

Although Maher admitted, “It gives me no pleasure to have to do this,” he issued a brutal takedown of the party. The stand-up comedian noted that right before his summer break, he had Vice President JD Vance as a guest on the show — during which Maher said that his “vote is in play” for the 2028 presidential election if the Democratic Party keeps going in the way of the DSA.

“Not a week goes by where I don’t read about some newly-chosen, exciting new face in the Democratic Party,” he explained. “And then when that face opens its mouth, the communist manifesto or some other crazy s*** comes out.”

Maher then read quotes from various Democratic Socialists, comparing them to communist ideals. Both U.S. House of Representatives nominee Darializa Avila Chevalier (D-N.Y.) and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani support “seizing the means of production.”

“Now maybe you missed that in school, or missed school altogether, but that’s communism,” Maher claimed. “That’s communism, which we tried, and it doesn’t work.” He added, “The DSA has switched. Even five years ago, it shunned communists. That changed. Things change.”

Finally, Maher doubled down on his remarks about the 2028 presidential election. “Yes, my vote is in play,” he insisted. “I’m not voting for anyone who thinks the wrong side won the Cold War or cheers for the Intifada like it’s the World Cup.”

He added, “It’s so ironic, from the people who obsess about colonization. You know what’s being colonized? The Democratic Party.”

Although Maher acknowledged that “this nonsense is not where most Democratic politicians are right now,” he pointed out that more Democratic Socialists have been elected in recent years. After detailing current DSA platforms, the stand-up comedian declared, “Get your head out of your a**. I would vote for Sarah Palin before this s***.”
