MS NOW anchor Lawrence O’Donnell blasted Donald Trump on Wednesday’s (September 16) edition of The Last Word, saying that the president can’t end his war with Iran because he’s a “pathological liar.”

“If it does end during [Trump’s] presidency, it will have to be through a negotiation with Iran. And just imagine tonight what it must be like for Iran to be negotiating with a pathological liar. How do you negotiate with a pathological liar?” O’Donnell said on Wednesday night, per The Huffington Post.

The veteran news reporter said the war “drags on because Donald Trump has no idea what to say to the Iranian regime to end his war. And… it would be impossible for anyone in Iran to believe anything Donald Trump might say or promise.”

Trump’s war with Iran began in February and, as of September, has resulted in the death of at least 18 U.S. military service members and over 3,000 Iranians. The conflict has also raised gas prices because Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil is transported.

Despite previous attempts at ceasefires and peace agreements, no deal has been reached. O’Donnell claims that is because the U.S. has a “pathologically lying president” and a “war cannot end with a pathological liar on one side of the negotiations. This is a president who can’t be trusted on anything that he says.”

O’Donnell said, “Everything that a president does say is studied by every other government in the world, especially America’s adversaries.” He noted that even the “lower-visibility things” are being watched; therefore, “Iran can see that Donald Trump lies about everything.”

This included Trump’s attempts to pressure the Federal Reserve regarding interest rates. “The Iranian regime was watching Donald Trump today defending the new Federal Reserve chair for voting to raise interest rates, something that Donald Trump previously seemed to believe was some kind of crime,” O’Donnell stated.

The host said that this was further proof that “Donald Trump doesn’t mean anything he says, which is the worst possible thing you could know about a president in the middle of a war.”
