‘Chicago P.D.’: See LaRoyce Hawkins on Set for One of His Last Episodes
What To Know
- Filming has begun for Chicago P.D. Season 14, which premieres October 7 on NBC.
- This season will begin with LaRoyce Hawkins’ final episodes.
- Marina Squerciati shared a photo from set.
Intelligence is getting back to work. Filming has begun on Chicago P.D. Season 14, set to premiere this fall in its usual 10/9c slot on Wednesday, October 7, on NBC.
“Back to work,” Marina Squerciati (Detective Kim Burgess) captioned a photo on Instagram of herself with LaRoyce Hawkins (Officer Kevin Atwater) and Patrick John Flueger (Officer Adam Ruzek), three of the four stars who have been on the show since the beginning (Jason Beghe is the other). Based on the image, which you can check out below, Intelligence will be doing what it does best when it returns: working the streets and, looking at the tools in Hawkins and Flueger’s hands, busting into a building.
The upcoming 14th season will be Hawkins’ last on the show, and he’ll only be back for a few episodes to wrap up Atwater’s story, giving him a proper exit onscreen.

Chicago P.D. sort of has a way to write out Atwater already after last season. He and fellow officer Tasha Fox (Karen Obilom), who moved to Miami, are having a baby together. It could be as simple as Atwater deciding to leave Chicago to raise their baby together, and what we see above is one of the last cases he’s working with the team before he does.
But it’s also possible that the events of the case(s) at the beginning of the season lead to him realizing that he needs to either leave the CPD because of the dangers of the job or at least of Intelligence, or something forces his hand and he says goodbye to his teammates. What we don’t think will happen is that he’s killed in the line of duty — it feels like that would be too tragic with a baby on the way and him finally possibly making a relationship work.
However he’s written out, we do expect there to be some great moments with Atwater, Burgess, and Ruzek, who have become close over the years (and Atwater and Burgess started out as partners on patrol).
How do you think Chicago P.D. should and will write out Atwater? Let us know in the comments section below.

I think it’s a mistake writing Kevin off it makes the show good and if you’re gonna write him off, at least make it happy you guys keep taking off all the good actors and replacing them with ones. People really is never seen that aren’t that great you oughta rethink some of your choices. I’ve really liked this show and I hope you don’t bring somebody on that makes it not worth watching anymore.
-
J
people running the show can’t help when actors want to leave. They show isn’t writing him off because they want too.
-
-
B
It's a Huge mistake writing him off. He's a favorite, and 1 of my favorites. The show is going to lose many viewers.
-
R
The show is slipping and keep letting the good folks go. Seemed to start with them dumping Olensky. Seems the entire Chicago franchise is coming to an end with too many good folks leaving and keeping the "drama players". Very sad to a good franchise (PD, Fire and Med) going down.
-
T
Atwater will definitely be missed. He’s one of my faves. Already miss Olenski and Halstead. Don’t do it!!
-
J
I absolutely agree!!! He was always there in the thick & good character unlike Jay.
-
N
I will not continue to watch after this.
-
-
-
G
Just as long as it’s a happy ending and not another death. He deserves happiness
-
K
Noooooo .. please don't take Kevin off the show. He's one of the favorites. I was so disappointed when they took Olenski off.
-
S
I still cry about how he died! 😭😭
-

S
Could be that LaRoyce wants to leave the show after 14 years. They probably have a very tough production schedule. Maybe he wants to take a long vacation. Maybe he wants new acting challenges.he deserves it all.
-
N
I understand what you are saying. But the show won't be the same. I'm out.
-
-
J
I love Atwater, but its good that he has finally has a chance at real relationship, and a family of his own. Im sorry to see him go, but he deserves to be happy.
-
G
This will be my last season watching the show if Kevin is leaving.
-
R
I hate to see Kevin go, he's got some bad things happen to him and he tries to do things right. You keep getting rid of the good ones that make the show and people will start looking for some other show!!!
-
J
The upcoming 14th season is not Hawkins last show on Chicago pd, and he’ll only be back for a few episodes to wrap up with his story.
-
-
R
Well I’ve watched Chicago P D from the beginning and I watch several of Dick Wolf’s shows and Chicago PD is my favorite. It’s sad that Hawkins will be written off in any way but if it has to be done because it is business then I hope it’s a happy ending. He’s a very good actor and fits the show.
-
S
Hate to see Kevin leave. He will be missed for sure, but definitely don’t kill him off so maybe he can pop in once in awhile to work a case that brings him back to Chicago from Miami. That’d make for great story. 😊☺️. Anyway best wishes LaRoyce & THANK YOU! 👏🏻👏🏻☺️❤️
-
G
Let Atwater be happy and move on and enjoy his family.
-
P
Huge mistake writing Kevin off the show
-
M
Maybe he's moving on to another series. That happens oftentimes.
-
-
F
Please don't let Kevin go can't his girlfriend come back and join cast. She worked a case with them please!!!!!!
-
S
Writing off Atwater is a devastating blow to Chicago PD (Blue!). My guy, Al Olensky, is a prime example. To his credit, his exit from the show should be monumental lost to the Intelligence Team. It should sting the team and the audience because Atwater will always be a fan favorite to the Chicago PD (Blue!) family.
-
S
Some of you put this all on the show when maybe this was his choice. The same can be said for all of the great actors that have already left so maybe before everyone gets all worked up stop and consider that you don’t know and be thankful that they have put out a great show for 14 seasons and I am sure that they all plan for that to continue hopefully with some great new actors. I’m certainly going to give them a chance.
-
H
I believe Atwaters girlfriend should have her safety and security compromised in Miami. Whole Atwater is visiting. So he can show off his Chicago Intelligence in Miami. He will then choose to relocate to be closer to "baby mama" and newborn.
-
M
He should leave being happy
-
T
I don't want to see Atwater leave as well, but people, this is a choice that LaRoyce made on his own. He wants to move on to experience other things in the entertainment world. He has been on P.D. going on 14 seasons, let him walk away guilt free and be happy for the man, you'll see him on another show.
-
K
I think it's another show where you're getting rid of BLACK PEOPLE as a key character.
-
B
Really same old story playing the race card
-
-
T
Atwater should join Tasha in Miami and raise their child together. Maybe they could decide to get married and solidify their relationship. That would be a very satisfying way to wrap things up!
-
S
This will probably be my last season watching as a loyal fan. First we lost Olinsky and now Atwater. Not good!
-
D
I do not understand, in the finale Fox told Kev she did not like Miami she worked with the team perfectly. Now Kev is leaving ?
Kev , Burgess, Adam are like the three musketeers. They are Family , please do not make this horrible decision. Now if he wants to leave that’s his decision . But those that think they are moving on to better opportunities. Should look at Mariska Harditay , I-Tea have had great success being on the same show ( employed ) & loving it for many years . Love ya Atwater ❤️
-
D
Noooooo, he’s my favorite. Hopefully he comes back.
-
M
Once again the good guys are written out. I too am out when his character leaves.
-
M
Atwater made Chicago PD a must watch show! I hate to know that he's leaving. 😪 I hope he is not killed off but rather chooses to move to Miami to be with his family and start a new job as a high ranking official in a law enforcement agency!
I lovecyou LaRoyce Hawkins!
-
J
I think Atwater should stay, he’s a really good actor and fits in good with the team.
-
H
I won't be watching after Atwater leaves. Good luck with your future Endeavors, Laroyce.
-
G
He will be missed, he deserves happiness
-
D
Wait a min, is the actor on the show his girlfriend in real life,?
-
D
Big Mistake, Matter of fact I have heard many say that the show will not be the same without Kevin, rating will go down and I will stop watching the show, No one has said WHY Kevin is being written off, Did he want to leave or did they retire him, Very disappointed,
-
L
They will need Atwater
-
S
He should definitely step away to have a family it’s always so heart breaking when the good ones die!!!
-
K
He was my favorite. He will be missed
-
D
I think Atwater should go to Miami to help raise his baby . Later there would be a wedding and they return to Chicago and it would be a big crossover event between all 3 shows before Atwater makes his final bow
-
K
Atwater is the only reason black people watch the show, so they'll lose the black audience for sure, but it doesn't seem like they care. In Trump's America, black creatives in front of the camera and behind the scenes are suddenly being pushed out and can't find work after having lucrative careers for many years. They are very outspoken about this on social media. Maybe it's Trump's friends, the Ellisons buying up all of the TV networks, but this isn't a coincidence. Read the Trump and the Heritage Foundation mandate Project 2025, and you'll see this shift is very intentional and it's happening all at once, across industries.

N
I started losing interest when Captain Voight started to mellow. He just isn't as edgy as
he started out as. Then beloved cast members started leaving. Now Kevin??? That will be the final straw for me. Sorry
-
H
I love Atwater. They should not write him off. If they do, his character should be left standing! He should be seen with his baby and his love together. There should be a scene or two or three of him going to be with them and/or him in Florida with them. Don’t leave us to imagine what that looks like, show us!
-
H
It's kool as long as he doesn't get killed off,....transfer or some job with Miami P.D. that's not demanding as intelligence
-
V
When Al left I shed tears, now Kevin! Kevin gives the shie a real Chicago mix. I love his swag CPD don't do it.
-
M
Just don’t kill him off. He’s too popular and loved.
-
S
Please don't write him off!
-
T
Kevin is not being let go he is leaving the show. The conversations seem to think so.
-
R
Why does he have to leave? He well be missed!
-
L
Please don't leave Kevin!
You are my favorite. If he just got to go, don't kill him of in case I can beg him back.
-
G
Spin off??? LaRoyce shows off his intelligence skills on a difficult case in Miami, the decide they need an intelligence unit, and BAM! Miami PD! ...and bring Halstead and Lindsey back! 😉
-
V
I'm very upset the LaRoyce(Kevin) is leaving. But leave a opening for him to come back to help out with a case. Love those Eyes!
-
V
Sorry to see LaRoyce leave the show…however, he was under utilized on a consistent basis..over the years some great story lines but then “crickets” and doomed to be single snd one dimensional…Hope he is off to something exciting..so talented and multidimensional in his talents… that being said, love the show and hope he is able to come
Back for cameos
-
V
It is a huge mistake to let him go. Get rid of Dante and Imani instead. Ever since we lost Alvin, Jay and Erin it has been losing appeal.
-
K
It's a huge mistake to write Kevin off the show. He's the best. It's our household's favorite show and Kevin is a huge reason why!! Nooooo. He can't go!!!
-
C
Keep Atwater on Chicago PD a longer. He will be missed. Don’t right him off completely.
-
J
I think Kevin should move to Florida and not be killed off. Please don't replace him with some woman that doesn't follow directions.
-
B
I for one will not miss him as he, in my humble opinion, he does not talk clearly but mumbles I genuinely struggle to understand him
-
L
Why is he bring written out. So another show with no minorities on it yet again. Will stop watching it when he leaves
-
M
Please give him a happy ending
-
D
Not all the best (in real life) police officers or detectives escape death in America. It's sad that heathens get a victory over the people who try to keep law and order! It was a miracle to see how the last female detective left the show after her team boss had a far fetched recovery, we all know should've died it that condition being stabbed and shot...so, sooner or later, we are going to see a star character's life come to an end...this is common sense.
