Will There Be an ‘All American’ Season 9?

All American Season 8 begins on Monday, July 13, on The CW. The eighth and final season also marks the end of an era for The CW, as it’s the last original scripted series still standing after the network overhauled its programming since it was acquired by NexStar Media Group. All American has evolved a lot over the course of its run. Is there a chance it could continue?

Here’s what we know about All American’s future.

Will there be an All American Season 9?

As of the time of publication, All American Season 8 is still set to be the final season. It follows Jordan (Michael Evans Behling), Layla (Greta Onieogou), Coop (Bre-Z), Cassius (Osy Ikhile), KJ (Nathaniel Logan McIntyre), Khalil (Antonio J Bell), Amina (Alexis Chikaeze), and Preach (Kareem Grimes) as the pursuit of their individual dreams unexpectedly challenges friendships and family.

Focusing on the three pillars that have always been at the heart of All American — football, family, and friendship — Season 8 picks up six months after the football cliffhanger at the end of last season and will span just one week in the Beverly and Crenshaw crew’s life. A week that will have them wondering if everything they’ve been through over the course of their lives has prepared them for this moment. A week that will ultimately reunite old with the new, friend with enemy, and alter the course of each of their futures forever.

All American originally starred Daniel Ezra as Spencer James, a high school football star recruited by Beverly Hills High coach Billy Baker (Taye Diggs). The early seasons depicted Spencer’s adjustment to his new school and life, forging bonds between the characters that would last forever. Billy, the show’s father figure, shockingly died in Season 5 in 2023, marking one of the biggest cast exits from the series. Ezra had stepped away as the series lead after Season 6 and appeared as a guest star in Season 7 as the show reset with a new collection of stars.

Season 7 ended on a big cliffhanger, but the Season 8 renewal guaranteed that ending would have the chance to be addressed.

Why is All American ending?

Nexstar Media Group acquired The CW in 2022, and the network subsequently went through massive programming changes. Most of its original scripted series were canceled or, in the case of All American, given a final-season order. The network now prioritizes unscripted programming and licenses shows made by international production houses instead of producing its own.

All American creator Nkechi Okoro Carroll said that they’re getting to finish All American the way they envisioned.

“How do I condense into just a few words what would be the longest love letter to this show, the fans, the cast, crew, staff, and producers,” she said in a statement. “My heart is so filled with love and gratitude for everyone who helped bring All American to life and kept it going for its historic run. It is so hard to say goodbye to the thing that you love, but we are so excited we get to do it in the way we envisioned with this final season.”

All American hosted a special on The CW all about the show’s history and final season on June 22. The tribute is streaming now on The CW app.

When are new episodes of All American?

All American Season 8 premieres with the first two episodes on Monday, July 13, at 8/7c on The CW. There are 13 episodes total in Season 8, so the All American series finale will air on Monday, September 28.

All American Season 8 Episode 1: “It’s been six months since Beverly and Crenshaw played that pivotal playoff game, determining who would move on to the championship. But little did they know, this coming week, would actually be the one to change the course of their lives. School may be almost out for the summer, but Cassius and KJ are just beginning the unexpected fight for their joint future. KJ’s intensity of late takes a turn, leaving loved ones worried and sweeping Khalil up in its tow. Meanwhile, Jordan and Cassius’ attempts at building a family relationship.”

All American Season 8 Episode 2: “Jordan struggles to reconnect with Layla while Cassius is determined to show he’s the right coach for Beverly. Amina’s sudden reappearance throws Khalil and KJ off balance just as they need to focus on the Showcase, stirring tension, jealousy, and unresolved feelings that neither are prepared to face. Meanwhile, Coop is riding high on her new professional opportunities.”
