Did ‘Grantchester’ Just Reveal How Series Will End?
What To Know
- Geordie Keating got an intriguing offer in Grantchester Season 11 Episode 2.
- This potential change would take Geordie away from front-line detective work.
- Alphy faced emotional turmoil with his mother, Mira, adding to the uncertainty about the future of the Vicar-DI partnership in Grantchester‘s final season.
Could Geordie Keating (Robson Green) leave his post as Detective Inspector in Grantchester? The latest episode hinted at the possibility, setting up a big decision for Geordie to make in Grantchester‘s final season. It also delivered a crushing blow to Vicar Alphy Kottaram (Rishi Nair), who finds himself in family turmoil once again. Could these storylines bring about the end of the Vicar and Detective Inspector partnerships that define Grantchester?
Grantchester Season 11 Episode 2 aired on Sunday, June 21, on PBS, and it ended with a surprising offer for Geordie. Geordie’s boss, the Chief Inspector (Anthony Calf), came to the station in Episode 2 to inform Geordie of his plan to retire. His retirement isn’t widely known yet. He wanted to ask Geordie to apply to be his replacement before he spread the news.
“I’m happy to be out of it, but I’d like to know that I’m leaving the station in safe hands,” he said. “I wondered if you would be interested in applying when the time comes.”
“Bloody hell. Figured I’d be doing this until they cart me out in a box,” Geordie replied.
Becoming Chief Inspector would take Geordie away from the front lines of his detective work, which would also mean that he can’t work with the town’s Vicar on cases as often, which is the whole premise of Grantchester.
Alphy had a heartbreaking experience with his biological mother, Mira (Nimmi Harasgama), in Episode 2 when she left town unexpectedly. Earlier in the episode, Geordie told Mira that Alphy was in it for the long haul with their reunion; if she couldn’t invest in him, don’t lead him on. She left without saying goodbye, crushing Alphy’s spirit.
With Mira coming into his life and leaving it so quickly, how will Alphy cope with the possibility that his investigations with Geordie may come to an end? Could Grantchester be setting up a narrative flip, where the town Vicar stays the same, and the new detectives come and go? Or will the show conclude with Alphy and Geordie deciding that the Vicar-DI partnerships should come to an end?
Whatever ending is in store, the second episode of Grantchester Season 11 seems to have been a big piece of the foundation for the series finale.
