What the ‘Grantchester’ Finale Script Reveals About Geordie & Alphy’s Future
Exclusive
What To Know
- The Grantchester series finale concluded with a peaceful picnic, symbolizing the show’s enduring sense of community.
- Showrunner Daisy Coulam reveals finale script details about what happens next as the story carries on beyond the screen.
After 11 seasons of mysteries in a quaint English town, Grantchester came to an end on Sunday, August 2. There won’t be a Grantchester Season 12, but we did get the inside scoop on what would happen next from the makers of Grantchester in our series finale interview. Warning: Grantchester series finale spoilers ahead.
The Grantchester team wanted the show to end as peacefully as the show has been for most of its run, but with some higher stakes thrown in for the last episode. Soon-to-be-promoted Detective Inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green) was shot on the job at the end of the penultimate episode, and he seemed close to death in the series finale. Thankfully, he survived. And the series ended with a picnic for the Grantchester friends that became family.
Showrunner Daisy Coulam told TV Insider that the directions written into the finale script dictated what would come next for the characters after the events of the finale: “The river will keep on flowing,” Coulam wrote. “The swans will keep swimming.” Basically, life would go on as it has for the Grantchester gang, only this time with Geordie retired from the police force and the family’s growing with Larry (Bradley Hall) and Jennifer’s (Melissa Johns) daughter, Daisy (named after the showrunner), and Leonard (Al Weaver) and Daniel’s (Oliver Dimsdale) adopted son, Raymond (Jax James).
Coulam said that killing off Geordie would have been “too dark for us.” After it was certain that Geordie would survive and that vicar Alphy’s (Rishi Nair) faith would be restored in the process, Coulam and her writers wanted to create an ending that expressed a continuation of the story.

“We wanted that sense that those characters are somewhere out there still, that life goes on,” Coulam told us. To that end, they added in a detail implying that Geordie and Alphy would continue their investigative partnership, albeit unofficially.
In the final scenes, Alphy told Geordie about a dinosaur skeleton that had gone missing from a college in Cambridge. The police weren’t on the case, so they wondered if they might have a go at it.
“It’s nice to think that these two are still doing things,” Nair told TV Insider. “It feels like if you walk into a pub in 10 years’ time, you might see them having a pint, discussing a crime over it.”

It was such a terrific show! It saddens me to see it end. There's not much on tv that has my interest as this series did.

I blubbered like a baby, so sad that it was the end. Loved every single episode, especially the last season. The ending was absolutely perfect for this wonderful cast. Won't see it's like again!! My very favorite PBS series for this 85 year old great-granny!!

I thought the ending was wonderful. Sad because I will miss watching the show but happy because it did leave me with a feeling that they are still together. It was a great show. I enjoyed watching it.

I was VERY upset when Georgie was shot but got thru to the end and was VERY happy. And listened again Monday night in case I missed anything. The ending WAS well done. They have been a family for awhile. If Alphy gets married there may be some dynamic change but expect not 180o...it is like they are all pieces of a puzzle, do best with all in Grantchester just being.

Good solid writing, superb script and acting. Had any of the writers or producers consider creating the finale in two week segments? The scenes and narratives were "crammed explanations and somewhat choppy" in order to tie up the series. The pace of the final scenes should have been the standard for the entire hour.

I actually cried seeing it end after 11 seasons. Very glad it ended on a positive note for all involved instead of the usual death of key figures. It was well done. I will miss them all. Thank you!!!!

Sorry that there are no more Grantchesters … it’s been a fabulous series!!!!!!
Question: did the punk who shot Geordie die at the church when he was with Alphy?
-
V
Does no one find it odd that Geordie almost dies and three of his children are nowhere in sight. And then none of the younger children would go on a family picnic at the end. Makes no sense. Just didn’t want to pay actors???

Previously enjoyed the show but I felt this season was underwhelming.
