‘Marshals’ vs. ‘Dutton Ranch’ Ratings: How Do the ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoffs Compare?
For the first time ever, two Yellowstone spinoffs were in-season at the same time this spring. It was a brief window, but there were two weeks in May where fans of the Taylor Sheridan Western universe could get updates on the lives of the remaining Dutton siblings on two different networks. Marshals, starring Luke Grimes, closed out its first season on May 24 on CBS. Dutton Ranch, starring Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, premiered on May 15 on Paramount+ and Paramount Network. How do the ratings of each series premiere compare?
The Marshals series premiere was the most-watched scripted series debut on CBS since 2018. It was viewed by 9.52 million viewers, the most-watched new scripted series premiere without a football lead-in since 2018, according to Nielsen, Live+SD Panel + Big Data. Marshals is the first broadcast series from the Yellowstone universe and is produced by Paramount TV Studios and 101 Studios.
Dutton Ranch, which released two episodes on its premiere day, also set a record for Paramount+. The Beth and Rip spinoff unseated Sheridan’s The Madison as the biggest original series launch in Paramount+ history. It’s also the biggest cable premiere since 2023. Dutton Ranch amassed 12.9 million views globally in the seven days after its premiere, the biggest in Paramount+ history. The Madison previously broke the record earlier this year, with 8 million viewers in its first 10 days. Dutton Ranch blew past that with its 12.9 million viewers in week one.
While Dutton Ranch is a hit for Paramount+ and Paramount Network, Marshals does beat Dutton Ranch in viewership. CBS is TV’s most-watched broadcast network, and Marshals is the most-watched new show on broadcast TV this year, so that’s not entirely surprising.
Dutton Ranch had 2.9 million total viewers on premiere night (May 15) across its two-episode debut on Paramount Network. It scored the biggest series premiere on cable since 2023, with 1.9 million viewers for the first episode. Dutton Ranch also ranked as the No. 1 cable entertainment telecast on premiere day among both adults 18-49 and total viewers.
In Marshals, with the Yellowstone Ranch behind him, Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty, and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence. Season 1 ended on a major cliffhanger that will require Kayce and his team to save his son, Tate (Brecken Merrill), from a new villain introduced in the episode’s final moments. Marshals Season 2 is currently filming in Utah. It comes out this fall on CBS.
In Dutton Ranch, when a natural disaster forces them to leave their new ranch in Dillon, Montana, behind, Beth and Rip move their family to Rio Paloma, Texas, to start a new ranching life. Their new start was thwarted again when an unexpected outbreak of a highly contagious disease plagued their cattle. Now, Beth and Rip have to start again, and they have to make an ally out of their Texan rival, Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening). When it comes to Beulah, Beth and Rip are keeping their enemy close. Dutton Ranch Season 1 has nine episodes total. The Season 1 finale comes out on Friday, July 3.
The other Yellowstone spinoffs are the 1883 and 1923 prequels. There were 6666 and 1944 spinoffs reportedly in the works, but there have been few updates on that series in the years since it was announced. Sheridan wrote all of Yellowstone and the previous spinoffs, but he’s not a writer on Marshals or Dutton Ranch. He is an executive producer on both.

For me Dutton Ranch is a big hit, I absolutely love it. Marshals for me doesn’t even compare, I do like Casey and that’s about it, just doesn’t float my boat, but I’m really excited about Dutton Ranch and can’t wait for the next episode. I just started the Madison and so far I’m impressed.

N
Same here, just watched a few episodes of Marshall's but that's it. Not a fan of the cast. Now Dutton ranch has me hooked.

A
Marshalls is not as good as I hoped☹️.
Dutton Ranch is great👍🏻❤️
-
E
I agree.
-
-
S
We can tell Sheridan isn’t a writer on both because they don’t compare to Yellowstone but Dutton Ranch is kind of comparable.
-
B
No comparison...I love Kacy's character, but the other "team members" aren't very good actors. The two female Marshals are hardly believable. Luke is having to carry the entire cast, and Kacy isn't dynamic character enough to pull it off alone.
-
M
Marshalls is not even close to the Duttons...
Marshalls my wife and I gave it a 5 for a score where Duttons we both gave the show like 8.5
-
G
It’s the characters that make a show. Rip and Beth are the best. I like Marshals but the intensity just isn’t there as it is in Dutton Ranch. Yellowstone was the best.
-
P
They are both good. One is on network TV the other is streaming. Hard to compare the ratings.
-
W
Marshall’s is not good

A
Totally missed the mark on Y: Marshals.

I decided not to watch Marshall, but I am truly enjoying Dutton Ranch. I have still to try the Madison.
I can see from the comments below that others do not care much about Marshall. I saw a few clips and I decided that the content was probably edulcorated to fit a “classic” tv show (like all the others). Dutton Ranch “feels” more like Yellowstone.
-
K
Disappointed with Marshall's. Didn't know so much "drama" went on in montana... the Madison was amazing .. Dutton ranch as always will be great. Question. So Sheridan sold his soul huh??
-
C
Dutton Ranch nailed it!!!
-
S
Apples and oranges. Can't fairly compare network TV with streaming TV.
-
T
You can on content. They do lean in a different direction. Yellowstone was the best.

W
I absolutely love Marshall's and Dutton Ranch...both are number 1 in my mind. I don't know what people want, they both have great actors and a great script
-
J
Marshalls is embarrassingly bad; Dutton Ranch is great
-
N
Well they have to hold back on cussing etc when the Marshalls is on network tv but sadly, it doesn't have the same feel as Yellowstone/Dutton Ranch. And what's with Casey's weird attitude with not caring about killing people. I will continue to watch Marshalls because I like cowboy stuff.
-
C
Dutton is Delicious 😋
-
K
Dutton Ranch would get high ratings if was on cable like Marshalls is. I love Dutton Ranch and Marshalls.
-
M
Maybe we don’t want to hear so much cursing. In Dutton Ranch like Yellowstone the cursing is unnecessary.
-
C
Dutton Ranch is definitely better than Marshals!
-
J
Love both Marshals and Dutton Ranch. Didn't like The Madison at all.
-
B
I think they need to combine them Marshalls and Dutton ranch and then air it over regular CBS TV.
-
S
I have to turn on Closed Captioning to understand the word salad that spews from Andrea & the head of their unit (what's his name?). They both need to be replaced.
-
J
I tried watching Marshals and truly wanted to like it. But the over-the-top, ridiculous, almost comical situations ruined it for me. Seeing Casey run down speeding cars on horseback or getting into a gunfight in every episode instead of the show relying on good storytelling like the rest of the Yellowstone universe, ruined it for me. I couldn't force myself to waste my time with the show anymore.
-
D
Dutton ranch clearly is way better than marshals.better story and acting.Marshals actually is terrible.I watched 3 episodes and that was enough for me way to corny.Rip and Beth win clearly hands down.
-
C
Dutton is great, you can connect.Marshall’s reminds me of a paint ball game. The Madison is a snooze without Kurt-he should have switched leads.
-
V
They curse too much and I could not stand it. They could use better words than cursing.
-
D
Love yellowstone. I couldn't believe how shitty Marshalls was written. It's horrible. Dutton ranch is great. Feels like yellowstone continuation.
-
W
Dutton Ranch is GR8, didn’t like Marshall’s at all.
-
M
Marshals lackluster acting from the 'newbies' (you know who I mean) and poor script is cringe worthy. (Pretty much what's already been said by others; just not believable acting)
I've tried to keep watching, hoping it would improve, but it just keeps disappointing. 👎
🏆Dutton Ranch on the other hand, never disappoints on acting or script!! Very engaging and believable; I just wish we didn't have to wait for each episode to drop weekly. 🤩
-
E
Kayce should take his son and move to Texas with the Beth and Rip on the Dutton Ranch. I like Kayce but the Marshals can't come near Dutton Ranch.
-
G
Casey and his son should move in with Beth and R.I.P. and he can join the sheriff department.
-
M
Marshalls is a 5 at best...Where the Duttons is a 9 and Yellowstone made a 10
-
C
I am with most Marshalls isn't up to Taylors potential in my opinion. Just a few pretty faces. Who cannot articulate their lines. But I love their clothing.. and Sunday the same Abt the guys built well but cannot articulate their lines either. And the series just isn't Taylor's writing. But the Durton's is Yellowstone with the real main characters. Who hold your interest. And have you waiting to see the next episode. That's my 2cents worth..
-
D
We really like Marshalls.
Couldn’t take the continuous foul language on Dutton Ranch. It’s like the writers only know a few words and use them over and over. If they would tone it down we would watch it. We just don’t need it. But to each their own.
-
T
We really like the Dutton Ranch but every other word is the F word. the story would be just as good or even better if they cleaned that up some.
-
S
Marshals is Taylor Sheridan's play for this generation's sexiest crop of people. It's not here to make a bunch of friends, it's here to rub people's noses in hot people. It's what the Vampire Diaries was 15-16 years ago. In fact, Marshals has a Vampire Diaries alum in it. Dutton Ranch is for the Yellowstone Die-Hards who want all of the notes of the old show. It's for the people who want their Train Station or Beth Crash out.
-
D
Marshals and Dutton Ranch are amazing. The Madison made me vomit 🤢
-
T
Neither one can hold a candle to Yellowstone. They have soften them a little too much. Don’t even like Beth as much on Dutton Ranch. Carter could have never talked to her that way. Probably softer because of CBS and a few different writers. This fan base will fade some I think.
-
D
Watch series series what about real life friends family make fun talking bullshhits no tell what John Dutton did tell me some joke have fun who gives about series you must watch what no feelings in this new series only money
-
D
Love Dutton Ranch, everything about it. I re-watched Marshals, and liked it better the second time. The Madison is okay, interested to see what's coming up. I can watch any of these. Waaaay better than anything else the tv has to offer out there these days.
-
M
Dutton Ranch is the true no.1 show hands down
-
D
Marshals is just the same old tired cop drama with a Yellowstone "skin" over it. Dutton Ranch feels like something original though not as engaging as Yellowstone.
-
V
Marshall's is a terrible spin off. Like watching CSI. I love Rip & Beth.
-
H
Dutton is the one for me don’t care for the cast of Marshalls and Casey seems boring to me
-
S
Two different birds! I love them both. Duttons picked up pretty quick, but it had a familiar cast, we know the actors from other movies.
Marshals has to build on only a few, there is plenty in the works though. I hope they bring back the Andrea, she and Casey would be a great team to do the VA retreat together snd Tate as well.
-
C
I really like the marshal show I like it in Montana the ranch is good but the Dutton ranch they have to many fires going on the Madison is ok but it reminds me of a chick flick
-
E
Dutton Ranch showrunner was fired recently. Look for a new producer for Season 2
-
D
Marshals is awesome!!! Love the show!!! I want some more!!!
-
Y
This doesn't give enough information and has a confusing format

Marshalls : The audio is hard to understand, just a bunch of mumbling men. At first I thought it was just me, but my friends soon said the same thing, and I read several comments about it. Also, all the military jargon and abbreviations sail right over my head. Dutton Ranch: Never realized Beth was so into ranching. I can't imagine her being a poor rancher. Just hope it's not a "rinse and repeat" of Yellowstone
