What To Know

  • Retired FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer suggested Annie Guthrie and her husband Tommaso Cioni are “laying low” due to potential plans for a defamation lawsuit.
  • Despite being cleared by law enforcement, Annie and Cioni have faced ongoing online accusations that they were involved in Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.
  • Nancy has been missing since February 1 when police believe she was abducted from her Tucson, Arizona home.

A retired FBI agent has shared her thoughts on why the daughter and son-in-law of missing Nancy Guthrie have been lying low amid the 100+ day investigation into the 84-year-old’s alleged abduction.

Jennifer Coffindaffer, a former FBI agent who has been closely following the case, shared a lengthy post on X on Thursday (May 14), responding to reports that Annie Guthrie and her husband, Tommaso ‘Tommy’ Cioni, “have not been seen” for weeks.

“Why are they laying low?” Coffindaffer asked. “Obvious concern over ridicule I believe, but also perhaps this: Defamation suits.”

Nancy, the mother of Today‘s Savannah Guthrie, has been missing since February 1, when police believe she was abducted from her home in Tucson, Arizona. While investigators have released doorbell camera footage of a masked suspect and a description of that individual, no suspects have been named.

Early in the investigation, rumors spread about the possible involvement of Annie and/or Cioni after law enforcement took the couple’s car for evidence. Annie and Cioni were the last two people reported to have seen Nancy before her disappearance, as the three had been out to dinner on the evening of January 31.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos later ruled out the Guthrie family’s involvement in Nancy’s disappearance. “The Guthrie family, to include all siblings and spouses, has been cleared as possible suspects,” Nanos said in a February press conference. “The family has been nothing but cooperative and gracious and are victims in this case. To suggest otherwise is not only wrong, it is cruel.”

Despite being ruled out by law enforcement, online conspiracy theorists have continued to suspect the couple, with some pointing to their disappearance from the public eye as evidence.

Coffindaffer, however, suggested Annie and Cioni may be lying low because they plan to file a defamation suit.

“In most states, including Arizona, one has to prove that a falsehood was made, such as being accused of a crime, and that the person(s) suffered damage,” she explained before detailing the various ways the couple has had their reputations tarnished.

Coffindaffer noted how Annie and Cioni have faced “public ridicule and accusations, not that they killed a stranger, but worse, that they abducted/killed their mother.” She added that these accusations could have also affected their son, Pietro.

One key part of a potential lawsuit is whether their jobs were impacted. Coffindaffer pointed out that Cioni, a 6th-grade biology teacher, is no longer listed as a teacher for the current school year.

“Perhaps he has taken leave or perhaps the school is concerned about listing his name since millions remain convinced he abducted his mother-in-law of 20 years. Either way, this action indicates damage to Tomasso,” she stated.

“The bottom line is the entirety of how they have been damaged will be considered if a suit is lodged against those indicating they are responsible for what happened to Nancy, if as LE has said, they had nothing to do with the crime,” Coffindaffer continued.

She added, “As I see it, their low profile, lack of band appearances, possible affects on work income, and what their child may be going through would all be part of such a suit in terms of damages. Is Annie & Tomasso laying low actually a beacon as to how damaged they are and an indication of their plans to come?”

As Coffindaffer noted, Savannah has steadfastly stood by her sister and brother-in-law since the beginning of the case.

I think any more reporting is unnecessary unless they find her body.

It’s gone on too long, stop already feel for the family but even her famous daughter is getting on with her life. Unfortunately people go missing all the time but unless they are rich, famous etc nothing is said.

I have never been one to even consider anyone in Nancy's family to be responsible for her disappearance and it just upsets me when I see anyone accusing them of doing wrong. I have been there after my husband was kidnapped and murdered and it hurts when people falsely accuse you, then there are no... I am so sorry I was wrong confessions from anyone who falsely said the horrible things. People can be horrible and say horrible things and don't even care, how sad is that.

How can u not know that it’s the son-in-law?? It’s apparent from the evidence that the authorities have. & now Annie & him are laying low…haven’t been seen in public for weeks.

    Find Nancy

The perps would likely be identified if more information was available to the public. Cases are solved by genetics, jailhouse plea bargains, accidental stops, and citizens seeing info about people (videos etc). Given genetics aren't getting us there...the next fastest is posting lots of info online for citizens to look through it.

I have always thought her son in law and her daughter were prime suspects. Most people are abused by family members.

In most cases, the true suspect(s) are most always the last one to have seen the missing and or deceased in question....and if they were all out to dinner why was it only annies husband who was some how the only one who was dropping her off, where the heck did Annie go and why wasn't she also dropping off her mother if in fact they all had just been out together?? Hmmm dunno but did they give them a lie detector test like many others are faced when they are the last to have seen the missing/deceased??

I was so happy when I saw that Jennifer Coffindaffer stood up for these two people. God bless her for doing this because she was the only one basically. I tried telling others myself several times on social media innocent until proven guilty. I really felt for Annie and Tommaso and their child. In fact, I think Tommaso and Annie should sue "Chris M. from The Interview Room. He has indeed "painted" a picture to all his audience that these two are guilty. Then there are the Al Generated crime video's that don't help as well. Also, I feel Tommaso and Annie should sue JLR Investigates. Jonathon Lee Riches aka JLR. He has been horribly accusing Annie and Tommaso. He even put a photo on X of their home from what I have been told, but I haven't verified that yet. He told lies about them wanting to get a loan or something from Nancy. Then JLR even painted a picture in his followers heads that Annie and Tommaso's home was the crime scene. He has over 500,000 viewers so I can imagine the damage it's done to their lifestyle. People like JLR putting out evil information that is false for sure should be sued. God bless the Guthrie family. I wish for them to have resolution very soon.
