‘Outlander’: Could Show Return for a Movie After Finale? 5 Ways It’s Possible
Spoiler Alert
What To Know
- Did Outlander‘s series finale leave room for the story to continue? We break down a few potential paths towards a movie.
- From Claire and Jamie’s fate to Brianna’s baby twist, the possibilities are endless.
Outlander‘s eighth and final season has officially concluded, but is it really the end for Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), the couple at the center of this TV adaptation of Diana Gabaldon‘s novels? Warning: Spoilers for the Outlander Series Finale ahead!
The show’s closing episode, “And the World Was All Around Us,” saw Jamie and Claire gasp themselves awake, seemingly from the dead, after he was shot on the battlefield at Kings Mountain. The cliffhanger conclusion may be setting fans up to imagine their own interpretations, but there is more than one way a movie continuation of Outlander is possible following the finale episode.
While we wouldn’t imagine the show returning for several episodes, the door was definitely left open for a continuation in a potential movie. Below, we’re breaking down a few of the points that serve as a welcome jumping-off point.
Are Jamie and Claire dead or alive?

Starz
While the implication is that Jamie and Claire survived the series by opening their eyes in the final seconds before the post-credit sequence featuring a Diana Gabaldon cameo, a follow-up film would answer the lingering question. Hopefully, it would make room for an explanation behind their survival, as we’ve only brushed upon Claire’s healing powers in the show, without explicitly diving into the true nature of it.
Brianna’s Baby Isn’t a Time Traveler
Plucked from the pages of Gabaldon’s books, it’s revealed in the finale that Brianna’s (Sophie Skelton) new baby, Davy, doesn’t have the time-traveling gene. This feels like a major revelation to drop in the show’s final moments, and the potential setup for conflict is strong as Brianna and Roger (Richard Rankin) have traveled back and forth between the past and present most often, including with their first two children. Will Davy keep them anchored to the past as Claire implied? It’s something we’d be eager to learn more about in a potential follow-up film.
Another Book Looms on the Horizon
Gabaldon’s Outlander book series has yet to conclude, and so, there’s a whole other novel’s worth of tales to pursue if the show returns for a movie. The yet-to-be-released A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out is Gabaldon’s tenth novel in the main series. Needless to say, we’d happily continue to explore Jamie and Claire’s lives onscreen if there’s material to pull from.
Blood of My Blood Crossover
While the show’s creatives and Gabaldon have noted the separation between Outlander and its TV prequel series Outlander: Blood of My Blood, little easter eggs in the newest series have built up some exciting threads for crossover opportunities, including the introduction of a brother Claire never knew she had. Is it possible they’ve crossed paths and just didn’t know, or could a movie bridge the gap between these two stories? We certainly wouldn’t mind it!
The Happy Ending
In the world of Outlander, a happy ending may be rare amid war and other challenges from the 18th century, but surely if Jamie and Claire are indeed alive, we’d prefer to see their happy ending at length, rather than a mere breath at the end of the final episode. After they built the family they have, what better way to conclude the show’s run, than with a movie that brings them all together, one last time, sans the threat of an impending battle…
Only time will tell whether or not Outlander will return for a potential movie, but let us know where you stand on the idea in the comments section below.

I think the ending was as close to perfect as could be for a series that had to conclude before the final book has been published. I absolutely loved it on all levels!!!

I was disappointed with the ending and felt like there was much more that hadn’t been explained! Hopefully a movie will be made to explain Jamie and Claire waking up and what happens with them and family!

I thought Blackjack was killed when Jamie’s clan stampeded the herd of highland cows through the door that went in to the prison where Blackjack was keeping Claire prisoner and where he raped Jamie. I don’t remember Jamie killing Blackjack in battle.

I too was disappointed with the ending. What happens to the family could spin off from outlander.

after all the time investing in the series, the finale was a letdown…too many goodbyes and a terrible final scene. It only works if there’s a movie after the final book is published

The ending broke my heart. I would like to think a lot of us fans would love to have a movie to follow up Jamie and Claire’s love story. The ending just left me wanting more. So much so that I’m over here googling about whether it’s a possibility and came across this. That gasp of air at the end wasn’t closing the chapter for me. It made me feel like another was yet to be discovered. Please! Bring us a movie that will allow us to know that Jamie and Claire did beat the odds or even to see what their “happily ever after” story looks like…..
