What To Know

  • White House faith adviser Paula White compared President Trump to Jesus Christ during a Good Friday event.
  • Morning Joe hosts and guest John Fugelsang criticized the comparison.
  • Fugelsang further mocked the analogy, highlighting contradictions between Trump’s behavior and Jesus’ teachings.

SiriusXM host John Fugelsang spoke with Joe Scarborough on Friday’s (April 3) edition of Morning Joe, expressing disbelief that White House faith adviser Paula White would compare President Trump to Jesus Christ. And he made a shocking quip linking them both to ladies of the night!

The segment opened with a clip of White speaking at a White House event ahead of Good Friday, where she said, per Mediaite, “Mr. President, no one has paid the price like you have paid the price. It almost cost you your life. You were betrayed and arrested. And falsely accused.”

She continued, “It’s a familiar pattern that our Lord and Savior showed us. But it didn’t end there for Him, and it didn’t end there for you. God always had a plan. On the third day, He rose, He defeated evil, He conquered death, hell, and the grave. And because He rose, we all know that we can rise. And sir, because of His resurrection, you rose up.”

“Anybody that went to Sunday School for more than a year would understand that Jesus Christ’s kingdom is not in Washington D.C., is not in the White House, is not where these Christian nationalists are claiming it is,” Scarborough said before introducing Fugelsang. “Jesus always said it’s somewhere far away from the dirtiness of politics.”

Fugelsang, a comedian and author of the book The Separation of Church and Hate, said he agreed with Scarborough, adding, “Watching that, I’m reminded that the only way you can support both Donald Trump and Jesus is if you’ve never read either one of their books.”

“Because, friends, the only things Donald Trump has in common with Jesus is that they both spent a lot of time with prostitutes, and they both use ghostwriters,” he quipped.

Fugelsang went on to say that White was “capitulating” to Trump like people did Caesar, whom Jesus fought against. Referring to the story of Jesus rebelling inside the temple and flipping tables “over the way that some extreme conservative religious bosses collaborated with the empire to exploit the poor.”

“Then by Holy Thursday, the night he’s arrested, he gives the greatest parable. He gives the goats and the sheep where he says, individuals and nations are going to be judged heaven or hell by how they care for the poor, care for the sick, welcome the stranger, and take care of those in prison,” Fugelsang continued. “They arrest him, and by the end of the week, it’s the saddest story you’ve ever read.”
