Stephen Colbert Has Surprising Reaction to Trump’s White House Address
What To Know
- Stephen Colbert opened his April 1st Late Show with mock praise for President Trump’s Iran address.
- Colbert humorously criticized Trump’s inconsistent approach to the Iran conflict.
- He also mocked Trump’s behavior at a Supreme Court hearing on birthright citizenship.
Stephen Colbert opened Wednesday’s (April 1) edition of The Late Show in an unusual fashion, by praising President Donald Trump.
“It was a big night on all the broadcast networks, at 9 o’clock, Donald Trump gave a national primetime address,” Colbert said, referring to the president’s White House address on the Iran conflict. “It was concise, intelligent, and brought the nation together with shared purpose.”
The late-night host could barely get through his mock praise without smirking. As the studio audience laughed, Colbert added, “April Fools!”
Colbert noted that Trump gave his speech on the first night of Passover. “So, whether you’re Jewish or not, I recommend having had four glasses of wine,” he quipped.
“I haven’t seen the speech yet,” Colbert said, explaining that his show was being taped hours before Trump’s address. “Also, because I put lamb’s blood around my TV, so the speech would pass me by.”
Colbert went on to say that Trump has continued to flip-flop on his approach to the Iran war and cited a quote from an unnamed member of his administration, who said the president “contradicts himself regularly, so nobody knows what he’s thinking. It’s on purpose.”
“Yes! It’s cunning!” Colbert added. “No one knows what Donald Trump is thinking. Not even Donald Trump. No, because, think about it, follow me down the rabbit hole here. Because if he knew what he was thinking, he might let it slip. That’s why he keeps his mind perfectly blank. Like nature’s most cunning opponent… the goldfish.”
Elsewhere in his monologue, Colbert accused Trump of “mob boss level intimidation” by attending the recent Supreme Court hearing about his attempts to end birthright citizenship.
“If you’re wondering how President Adderall could sit through a whole day of legal proceedings, the answer is that he couldn’t,” the host said. “The justices did not buy any of his administration’s arguments. So, midway through the morning, a humiliated Trump stormed out of the catastrophic SCOTUS hearing.”
Doing his impression of a “confused” Trump, Colbert joked, “Well, that was awkward. All nine of them wore the same black muumuu. The worst production of ‘Sister Act’ I’ve ever seen! Whoopi was terrible!”
