In Season 4 Episode 5 of Invincible, a long-awaited showdown finally erupts, one that has been building since Season 1. It is a clash between true equals, where neither side holds a clear advantage, and the stakes are as emotional as they are physical. This battle promises not just devastation, but consequences that will leave lasting scars.
In Episode 5, titled “Give Us a Moment,” Debbie Grayson (Sandra Oh) speaks her mind to her ex-husband Omni-Man, a.k.a. Nolan (J.K. Simmons), face-to-face, where the two have it out.
The last time Debbie confronted Nolan was after discovering his brutal, secret actions in Season 1, where she realized he had murdered the Guardians of the Globe. She confronts him regarding his betrayal, his condescending attitude, and the danger he placed their family in, acting as the grounded voice of humanity against him. Now, years later, Nolan has returned to recruit her sons for war, and well, she is less than thrilled about the situation.

Though Nolan is on his great apology tour of the galaxy, attempting to make up for his many, MANY sins, he realizes he needs to let Debbie speak her mind. In an emotionally charged scene, Nolan finally has a long-overdue heart-to-heart with Debbie, attempting to apologize for everything he’s done, but his words fall painfully short. Debbie doesn’t let him off easy, reminding him that he committed the unthinkable on Earth and then did it again on Thraxa, becoming, in her eyes, a literal nightmare.
There is no undoing that kind of damage, no easy path back to the man she once loved. When Nolan reveals he plans to take Mark (Steven Yeun) into an impending war, it only deepens the wound, confirming for Debbie that he still doesn’t fully understand the gravity of his actions. Her anger boils over as she rejects his apology outright, telling him exactly where he can go, especially after learning that just two months after leaving her, he went to Thraxa and had a child, Oliver (Christian Convery), with Andressa (Rhea Seehorn). For Debbie, the truth is inescapable: the man she loved is gone, and the one standing in front of her is the one who killed him.
TV Insider chatted with Sandra Oh about this heated scene, and the actress broke it down for us.
“I feel this show runs on multiple levels. There is what Debbie is confronting regarding her relationship with Nolan, and I feel myself approach it as a woman, and I feel I approach it as a human being on this Earth. And so with that is the understanding inherently, again, as a woman, as a human being, [there is this] betrayal,” explains the actress. “Betrayal and disappointment. But the ability to confront that power structure — Nolan, representing power, representing destruction — and that force coming to you and saying, forgive me.”
“I think it’s a real moment for healing,” explains Oh. “This is the kind of thing that I would always want to say. I kind of feel this is what you want to be able to say to the person who’s hurt you, who’s betrayed you, to the larger power structure, and to keep her her humanity. So approaching it wasn’t hard for me, because I think you just have to open up to what you inherently know as a human being.”
During the confrontation, Debbie explains to Nolan that his actions “killed the man I loved.” It is a line heavy with emotion, and one that Oh delivers with impact. But can redemption erase damage?
“Can there be redemption? Can there be forgiveness? I think that’s a very, very important question, not only for the characters, but also where we are in the world right now, and for us to confront what it would mean to ask for forgiveness, and to give forgiveness, is something important,” said Oh.
When it comes to finding her voice and expressing her anger, Oh believes Debbie
“I think it’s very, very important to see her anger, and not only see the anger, but also see the hurt of the betrayal underneath that anger,” said Oh. “I’m just grateful. This is a confrontation that I think the show has been building towards, but within that, I think [this scene] does set the tone for the family for the rest of the show. How [Debbie] deals with [her relationships] will set the tone for how Nolan will deal with it, and ultimately, Mark and Oliver as well.”
Afterward, over a VERY large glass of wine, Debbie talks to Mark about why he has to go, while Oliver is rightfully furious about being neglected by his father, who did not even stop in to see him. Following one last family dinner, the boys head off to war.

Meanwhile, Allen (Seth Rogen) recruits Zoey (Zoey Deutch), also known as Tech Jacket, for the upcoming Viltrumite War, assembling a team to take on the Viltrumites.
It is revealed that Viltrumite warrior Conquest (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is acting on the orders of Grand Regent Thragg (Lee Pace), giving him more than enough reason to hunt down Mark and attempt to rip him limb from limb. The Viltrumites soon find Mark and the others in space, leading to a brutal zero-gravity showdown where it becomes clear our heroes might be outmatched. “This is what happens when you don’t finish what you started, boy,” Conquest growls.
He nearly crushes Oliver’s skull, forcing Nolan to intervene. Then, after threatening Eve, Conquest pushes Mark too far, triggering a relentless counterattack that sends them crashing onto a nearby planet, where the real fight begins.

What follows is one of the bloodiest battles in the series. Mark fights with everything he has, eventually strangling Conquest, but not before the Viltrumite brutally tears into him, ripping out his internal organs by the handful. Mark ultimately kills Conquest, but the victory comes at a devastating cost, leaving it unclear if Mark has fatally wounded himself in the process.
