Kelsey Grammer’s daughter, Greer Grammer, revealed she hadn’t seen her dad for 12 years after he separated from her mom, Barrie Buckner, when Greer was only four years old.
Appearing on the recent episode of the Pretty Basic podcast, Greer said, per E! Online, that she wanted to clear up the “misconception” that she’s a nepo-baby, noting, “I didn’t know my dad till I was 16… My dad left when I was four, and then I didn’t meet him again till I was 16.”
Other than a brief encounter at a Blockbuster when she was 11, which she admitted she “ran away” from, Greer didn’t see her father again until she was 16, while working at a Christmas tree lot in Malibu. As she detailed on the podcast, Kelsey visited the lot with his then-wife, Camille Grammer, and their daughter, Mason (now 23).
“They walked in, and you could collectively feel like, maybe it was, like, it was just me, but I felt like I felt everybody’s breath just go,” Greer said, noting how her boss told her she could leave if she wanted to.
Despite the awkwardness, Greer decided to stay. “I just remember having a moment of being like, ‘No, I’m okay to stay here. If anyone’s gonna feel uncomfortable in this situation or feel like they need to leave, it’s not gonna be me. I didn’t do anything,'” she recalled. “I was a kid. If anyone’s gonna feel shame in this situation or guilt or weird, it’s not gonna be me.”
The Awkward actress remembered her dad “came up to me and said, ‘Are you Greer?’ And I said, ‘Yes, I am.’ And then he went, ‘I’m—.’ And I was like, ‘I know who you are. Duh.’And then he gave me his phone number and we went to lunch the next week, and that’s what kind of started our relationship.”
While Greer’s relationship with her father didn’t begin properly until she was 16, she does have some memories from when she was a small child.
“I remember going to Frasier at one point and being a baby—not a baby, but like, three probably,” she shared. “I think my mom took me out of the audience because I was loud.”
She also recalled a party at her dad’s house and him coming to see her in her pre-school play, The Wizard of Oz. “He also remembers because we’ve talked about it,” she said.
The daughter and father have come a long way since then, even starring alongside each other in the recent Frasier reboot.
Grammer is the father of eight children from different relationships. He shares his first daughter, Spencer Grammer, with his first wife, Doreen Alderman. Greer was his second child. He welcomed two kids, Mason and Jude, with his third wife, Camille. After marrying his fourth and current wife, Kayte Walsh, in 2011, the couple welcomed four children: Faith, Gabriel, James, and Christopher, who was born in October.
