According to a new report, it was the late John Amos‘ decision to delay his death announcement so that his daughter, Shannon Amos, wouldn’t “turn his death and interment into a circus.”

The Good Times star passed away on August 21, but news of his death wasn’t made public until six weeks later on October 1. That same day, Shannon revealed that she learned of her father’s death in the media along with the rest of the world and is “left with many questions.”

“I am without words…Our family has received the heartbreaking news that my Dad, John Allen Amos, Jr., transitioned on August 21st,” she wrote on Instagram. “We are devastated and left with many questions about how this happened 45 days ago, learning about it through the media like so many of you.”

Amos’ son, Kelly Christopher “KC” Amos, announced the actor’s death on October 1 in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. He reportedly died of natural causes.

Belinda Foster, a spokesperson for Amos, shared a statement with People explaining why K.C. failed to notify the family about the passing, writing, “At the time of John’s passing, K.C. was under a strict no-contact order from the Superior Court of New Jersey based on the Complaint that his sister Shannon brought against him in 2023.”

Shannon and K.C. have been at odds since last June when Shannon opened a GoFundMe page for her father, claiming he was a victim of “elderly abuse.” The page was later taken down after Amos and K.C. said the claims were false and that Shannon was the one inflicting the abuse.

“As a condition of his Pretrial Release, K.C. is precluded from making any contact with Shannon directly or indirectly by phone, social media, or any method of communication,” Foster continued. “At the time of his death, John was concerned that Shannon might turn his death and interment into a circus as she had done with other aspects of his life.”

“It was John who requested the delay in announcing his death to Shannon and the rest of the world,” she added.

Earlier this week, Shannon and Amos’ goddaughter Amy Goudy released a statement on Facebook calling out K.C. for his alleged treatment of his father and for not informing the rest of the family of the passing.

In her response statement, Foster said, “Shannon’s claims that John was abused are false. K.C. and I, along with numerous others cared for him. On several occasions when Shannon claimed that he was abused, law enforcement authorities sat with John and confirmed his well being.”
