Is ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff ‘1944’ Still Happening After ‘6666’ Was Scrapped?

Two Yellowstone spinoffs were announced in 2022 and 2023: 6666 and 1944. Franchise creator Taylor Sheridan just confirmed that not only is the 6666 spinoff dead, but he also never intended to make it, despite being listed as an executive producer when it was announced by Paramount. 1944‘s status is still in limbo, but according to an industry newsletter, it might not be dead.

Is the Yellowstone spinoff 1944 still happening?

Journalist Matt Webb Mitovich “assured” in his Matt’s Inside Line June newsletter that 1944 is reportedly “still in development at Paramount.” There were no further details about the Yellowstone spinoff.

Sheridan said on the Rodeo Time podcast in August that he “would never fictionalize” the real-life Four Sixes Ranch.

“People thought that that was going to be a thing, but I would never do that,” he said. Sheridan didn’t mention 1944 in this interview.

The 6666 spinoff was presumably going to follow Jimmy’s (Jefferson White) life at the ranch after he moved to Texas from Montana in Yellowstone Season 4. While no plot details have been confirmed, the 1944 spinoff was speculated to be about the Dutton family, with potential surviving characters from 1923 appearing.

Sheridan is moving from Paramount to NBCUniversal once his overall deal expires. His new deal with NBC will begin in 2029, which leaves time for more Yellowstone spinoffs between now and then.

Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime and MTV Entertainment Studios, said the following of 1944 and The Madison when they were announced in Fall 2023: “Within five years, we grew Yellowstone from a hit U.S. cable show with five million viewers into a global hit franchise with over 100 million fans around the world and multiple extensions – and, we’re just getting started. On the heels of 1883 and 1923’s success, our new planned spinoffs, 1944 and 2024, will take audiences on a thrilling, new, and unexpected journey with the complex and compelling storytelling that has become a hallmark of the franchise and has helped turn it into a worldwide cultural phenomenon — thanks to the creative mastermind of Taylor Sheridan.”

What Yellowstone spinoffs are still in the works?

With 6666 dead, the only confirmed Yellowstone spinoffs are Marshals on CBS and Dutton Ranch on Paramount Network and Paramount+. Marshals is currently filming Season 2, set to premiere this October. And Dutton Ranch was renewed for Season 2 in June. Production updates on the second season will be announced at a later time.

Sheridan is returning to writing films after stepping away from creative control of the Yellowstone TV universe. His production company will produce two new films, Visalia and Capture the Flag. The movies come from Andrew Lauren, a producer of The Brutalist, who says he conceptualized these stories with Sheridan before Yellowstone became a hit.

I am so mad at Taylor Sheridan for killing off Alex. 1923 is by far my favorite of any of his sagas. If Spencer is not in 1944, I will no longer watch any of Taylor Sheridan’s series. I love Harrison Ford and Helen Miran in this saga, however Brandon Skelnar is amazing. He draws you in like flies to honey.

1923 is my favorite along with the original Yellowstone, but and here’s the big BUT I hate how they wait so much time in between the next like it’s gonna be 2026 before the next one comes out which is the new series 1944 I wish that they would not give so much time in between people are not getting younger and series are shorter and shorter as time passes so it’s like you’re getting a sneak peek and a sneak peek and a sneak peek is how it feels. I wish this people these directors movie producers they would make it more than seven episodes and eight episodes and make it where people actually spend more than just seven weeks watching this and then it’s over with. that is the one thing I do miss about the way series used to be. They were like 1520 episodes long but that’s just my own opinion. I really hope they make these upcoming prequels a little longer. But all of these shows have been stupendous. Definitely keep you on your toes as far as suspense. Can’t wait till the next one comes out.

1923 was one of the most awesome shows I’ve ever seen. Spencer Dutton is in no small way my Hero.

I was very disappointed however in the deaths of Alexandra and Jack Dutton.

I hope to see Spencer’s journey continue in the sequel 1944. Being set during WWIIand Spencer being a war hero it will be very interesting to see how this new saga will play out.

Taylor Sheridan , You Go Boy !!!

Didn't Alex say that Spencer died 45 years after her, and they were dancing in heaven?

That leaves plenty of room for Spencer to do something.

I have enjoyed all the installments of the Yellowstone saga. 1883 was my favorite so far.....but all of them are excellent.

I officially dislike Taylor Sheridan very much for killing off Alex.

I agree.. he sure doesn't believe in happy endings... after all he put her through, he could have let her be happy.. misogynist!

1923 is captivating and thrilling. I am very disappointed that it ended only after seven episodes. Spencer and Alex's love story ended too soon. She went through hell to be with him through her travels only to die within hours of reuniting. There was a lot to that love story with high society Alex from the UK marrying a cowboy from Montana. Would have been fun to watch that relationship evolve. The two of them together would have been a whirlwind of exciting drama in the sleepy towns of Montana. Afterall, they are Dutton's and the Dutton's bring excitement wherever they go.

1883 was a favorite of mine too. I would love to have another season to see how Thomas and Noemi faired in Oregon, and Josef, after having his leg amputated. I actually thought Faith Hill and Tim McGraw did very well. Also sad that Sam Elliott’s character died. I love him as an actor.

I still have not seen Yellowstone. I prefer to watch in order of events as they happen. So I will wait for 1944 then I will watch Yellowstone and binge watch in its entirety. Probably within a month. lol. Loved 1883 so so much. Elsa narrating was key and I am so glad that she was brought back to narrate in 1923. Would be hard to see how that narration would come into play for 1944 but would love to have it happen!! S F, Oregon

  10. O

    OliveFlower

That was Elsa narrating. She says her younger brother died 45 years later.

1923 saga was one of my favorite snice Yellowstone conclusion. Can't wait until 1944 comes out next year.

I must agree once I got done watching 1883 I couldn’t help but go to 1923 and from the first episode with Alexandria I was hooked and binge watched the series within 2 1/2 three days maybe because I’m at home disabled I’ve actually started watching it a second time so they are saved as favorites in my Paramount+ channel can’t wait to see 1944 I had an idea that it might be based on World War II because of the error, but I hope it focuses more on the Dutton ranch than the war, but putting the war into it is inevitable considering the year Thank you, Taylor Sheridan and God bless

    CyanLamp

Both 1883 and 1923 are pretty amazing; overall, I prefer 1923, with both of the limited series under that title creating a great collection of stories and characters. I, too, was heartbroken at the death of Alexandra; she deserved far better than what she got, especially after fighting so hard in the face of seemingly insuperable difficulties. Jack's demise, however, came as no surprise; the American West in that period was still a genuinely unforgiving space to occupy, and the feud with Whitfield/Banner certainly did not allow any of the Duttons to indulge in any irresponsible or reckless behavior. This, however, is a core message of Sheridan's work across several different projects: Life is simply not fair, even to those who seem initially to have been born into felicitous circumstances.

  14. G

    GoldTrumpet

Um you do know Alex died in 1923 so I.domt see how we will see them together unless we have a Bobby Ewing in the shower moment or are they planning spirit visits from her? Either way, I will be glued to my set for the series and wish every show could be this good!

  15. O

    OliveBeer

I'm loving 1923 but please leave out the porn.. no need for it. It just makes it tacky

  16. R

    RedSeahorse

Killing off Alex pissed me off, who could be so lucky to be loved by a woman like that. I would've burnt the entire Montana territory to the ground

  17. G

    GoldSubmarine

We need everyone and 1923 play in 1944 specially, Harrison Ford so please do not end this

    1. P

      PurpleWheel

Ford is 80 at the end of 1923. Doubt if he would still be around for 1944. However there is Spencer and Alex's son to carry on and an unnamed son from a relationship Spencer has post 1923. Perhaps the two sons will go to war together. Dreadful thought but if Spencer stars in 1944 he would be too old to serve. Plus Elsa tells us at the end of 1923 that Spencer lives another 45 years.

  18. G

    GoldSubmarine

You cannot end us as a whole generation that we need to find out and needs to be still telecast on Paramount+ please do not end this as a beautiful show

  19. P

I have seen every episode of all of the segments of these series and I have been waiting for more.....Bring then on I'll be right there watching them....B

  20. Q

    Queeny

Yeah , I love all the shows of taylor sheridan. I was particularly hooked on brian skelner and the woman who played alexandria. Seems like it wouldn't be too far off for the widow, Michelle Rodriguez to stay on and end up being the widow he's with , but I doubt if taylor will do that. Wind River was an amazing movie.Everything he touches turns to gold

  21. J

    jamiewetzel444

I loved both 1883 and 1923 and look forward to 1944 but I hope they leave the porn out from now on. It was totally pointless in 1923.

  22. G

    GreenToast

I love all if the Yellowstone series and am looking forward to 1944! Just cut out the graphic nudity and sex scenes. It doesn't bring anything to the story, you are uncomfortable watching it with family members, and frankly it's bordering on porn...

  23. W

    WhiteRabbit

Since we already saw her DoD on her tombstone in the previous series, from before the new ones were written, he didn't have a lot of choice other than how it would happen.

  24. F

    feifei ai

944 really needs to happen as the link between 1923 and Yellowstone. The Dutton family tree could use more filling in.

  25. O

    OliveSnow

I love these other than 2 story lines in 1923, the classroom beatings and the prostitution. I look forward to 1944 but Alex and Jack are dead and Margaret went home so Spencer is the only one left.

  26. J

    jazznut

Hope 1944 makes it, looking forward to following the story begun with 1883 and then 1923.

  28. L

    LilSista

I completely agree with you! But the time another season comes out, you've forgotten the previous seasons. I love all Taylor Sheridan shoes (Landman, Tulsa King, the Yellowstone stories) but you have to wait so long for each new season of all of them! And then find out he's creating new shows (like Dutton Ranch, Marshall's, etc).I wish they would complete the Yelloestone series start to finish! Its honestly infuriating to the point where I just watch something else when they announce a new season!

  29. B

    Betty

yes, I cried at the end of both, but 1883 really hit me hard. I can just imagine what my acestors went through. I am surprised that they made it.

  30. G

Alexandra died from frostbite in 1944 already, but her and Spencers baby lived.

  31. J

    Joel

Loved 1923! I was thinking if they make a series of The Waltons-

  32. M

    Mark

Over the last couple of weeks or so they have been filming something just a mile or so away from my ranch. I can’t wait to see what it is so far everything Taylor Sheridan has made has been amazing.

  33. G

    GoldSubmarine

Oh I definitely should not have read these comments. Where the heck did you all get the advance information or did I fall asleep during the programs? When and where did Alex die? Did they ever get together? You guys kind of ruined it all for me now. I'll still watch but not the same enjoyment.

  34. G

    GreenFlask

Don’t agree. I think he will love Yellowstone and all the characters.

  35. G

    GreenButton

A you will be disappointed with the regional “Yellow Stone” the pre-sequel is so much better

    1. C

      CyanStrawberry

i watched in order that they recommended yellowstone then 1883 then 1923

  36. G

    GoldWheel

Did this author even bother to watch 1923? He is talking about Alexandria growing old yet she died not long after giving birth to John Dutton.

  37. O

    OliveSnow

When you read about 1944 it states that Alex and Jack and his wife are in it. If 2 are dead I don’t know how that happens. It also says that either Alex or Jacks wife would be the mother of John III so who knows what he will pull.

  38. O

    OliveBeer

The text says its a prequel to 1923…stopped reading at that point :/
