Connections explores historical progress throughout the decades. Burke takes an event or innovation from the past and traces its path throughout history to see what it led to in the modern world. Often, these instances don’t seem to connect, but Burke makes the case brilliantly. For instance, one of the episodes from the original series explores the invention of plastics due to the development of a type of Dutch cargo ship. One of the most popular episodes first aired in 1978 and followed the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, leading to the eventual invention of the printing press.
